In a recent counter-terrorism operation in the Guddar forest of Kulgam district in southern Kashmir, two terrorists were neutralized. However, the operation also resulted in the loss of two Indian Army personnel. The joint operation, codenamed "Operation Guddar", was launched on Monday, September 8, 2025, based on specific intelligence inputs. It involved the Indian Army, the Jammu and Kashmir Police, and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF).
Reports indicate that the encounter began when vigilant troops noticed suspicious movement in the forest area and challenged it. The terrorists responded by opening fire, leading to a fierce exchange of gunfire. During the gunfight, two army personnel, identified as Subedar Perbhat Gaur and Lance Naik Narender Sindhu, sustained critical injuries and later succumbed to their injuries. Another soldier was also injured in the encounter. The Army has honored the "supreme sacrifice" of the two fallen soldiers.
Two terrorists were killed in the operation. While the identities of the slain militants are still being officially established, initial reports suggest that one was a local militant, and the other is believed to be a foreign terrorist operating under the code name 'Rehman Bhai'. According to sources, the slain terrorists belonged to the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT).
The gunfight in Kulgam is the second major encounter in the district within the last five weeks. Last month, a prolonged counter-terrorism operation in the Akhal forest area of Kulgam lasted for 11 days. That operation resulted in the death of two soldiers and injuries to ten others.
The security forces continue to remain on high alert in the region. Further details regarding the encounter are awaited as the operation progresses.
