CP Radhakrishnan Elected India's 15th Vice President, Overcoming Sudershan Reddy in Landmark Victory.

Chandrapuram Ponnusamy Radhakrishnan has been elected as India's 15th Vice President. The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) nominee and current Maharashtra Governor secured 452 votes, defeating the opposition INDIA bloc's candidate, Justice B. Sudershan Reddy, a former Supreme Court judge. Reddy received 300 votes. The Vice Presidential election was held due to Jagdeep Dhankhar's resignation from the position on July 21, 2025, citing health reasons.

The election took place in Parliament, where Members of Parliament cast their votes between 10 am and 5 pm. Soon after the polling ended, the counting commenced. According to Returning Officer PC Mody, Secretary-General of the Rajya Sabha, a total of 767 votes were cast, with 752 considered valid and 15 deemed invalid. As Vice President, Radhakrishnan will also take on the role of ex-officio Chairperson of the Rajya Sabha.

C.P. Radhakrishnan, born on October 20, 1957, in Tiruppur, Tamil Nadu, has had a long and varied career in Indian politics. He began his public life as a member of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and later became a State Executive Committee member of the Bharatiya Janasangh in 1974. He holds a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration. Radhakrishnan was twice elected to the Lok Sabha from Coimbatore, in 1998 and 1999. During his parliamentary tenure, he held important positions such as Chairman of the Standing Committee on Textiles and member of committees on PSUs and Finance. He was also a member of a parliamentary delegation to the UN General Assembly in 2004 and the first Indian delegation to Taiwan.

Radhakrishnan served as the BJP's Tamil Nadu unit president from 2004 to 2007. During this period, he undertook a 93-day "Ratha Yatra," covering 19,000 km to advocate for linking Indian rivers, eradicating untouchability, and campaigning against terrorism in India. He also served as the BJP's All India in-charge for Kerala from 2020 to 2022. In February 2023, he was appointed as the Governor of Jharkhand, and in July 2024, he became the Governor of Maharashtra. He also took on additional responsibilities as Governor of Telangana and Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry.

Justice B. Sudershan Reddy, the opposition candidate, was born on July 8, 1946. He is a former judge of the Supreme Court of India and has also served as a judge of the Andhra Pradesh High Court and Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court. Reddy began his legal career practicing civil and constitutional law at the Andhra Pradesh High Court. He served as a government pleader, Additional Standing Counsel for the Government of India, and Legal Advisor to Osmania University. In 1993, he was elected President of the Andhra Pradesh High Court Advocates Association. He was appointed as a permanent judge at the Andhra Pradesh High Court in 1995 and later became the Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court in 2005. He was elevated to the Supreme Court of India in 2007 and retired in July 2011. After retirement, Reddy was appointed as the first Lokayukta of Goa in 2013.

With the support of 452 MPs, C.P. Radhakrishnan had a clear advantage in the Vice Presidential election. Prime Minister Narendra Modi cast the first ballot in the election. BJP leaders expressed confidence in Radhakrishnan's victory, considering him an "excellent choice" for the role. As the 15th Vice President of India, C.P. Radhakrishnan is expected to bring his extensive experience in politics and governance to the role, while also serving as the ex-officio Chairman of the Rajya Sabha.
