Recent political discourse has seen the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) linking Congress MP Manish Tewari's remarks about "neighbourhood nepo" to Rahul Gandhi, while Tewari himself has denied any such connection. This comes amidst a broader debate surrounding Rahul Gandhi's comments invoking a "Gen Z revolution".

The BJP has seized on Gandhi's references to Gen Z, accusing him of endorsing street protests and violence, drawing parallels to political upheavals in Nepal. BJP spokesperson Pradeep Bhandari argued that the Nepal movement was against corruption and dynastic rule, issues the BJP associates with the Congress party. Nishikant Dubey, another BJP MP, claimed that India's Gen Z opposes dynastic politics, corruption, and ideological ambiguity. Kiren Rijiju, a Union Minister, also criticized Gandhi's remarks, accusing him of undermining democracy after repeated electoral defeats.

Rahul Gandhi's comments, made at a press conference and reiterated on X, asserted that Gen Z would "save the Constitution, protect democracy, and stop vote theft". While Gandhi didn't explicitly mention Nepal, his remarks were interpreted as a reference to the youth-led protests in Kathmandu that ended the monarchy. This interpretation has fueled the BJP's attacks, with some members suggesting that any such revolution in India would lead to attacks on the homes of Gandhi and Akhilesh Yadav.

Manish Tewari has adopted a more cautious stance, observing that social media campaigns have toppled governments in Bangladesh and Nepal and hinting at potential similar changes in South Asia. Tewari's remarks have been interpreted differently, with the BJP attempting to link them to Rahul Gandhi's statements on Gen Z.

This isn't the first time Tewari and Gandhi have found themselves at odds. Earlier this year, Tewari contradicted Gandhi's claim of playing a mediating role during a past India-Pakistan standoff. Tewari clarified that the only communication was a routine Director General of Military Operations (DGMO) call from Pakistan, not any backchannel diplomacy involving Gandhi.

The BJP has also criticized Manish Tewari for changing parliamentary constituencies, drawing parallels to Rahul Gandhi's choices. BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawala accused Tewari of not fulfilling promises in his previous constituencies.

The focus on Gen Z is particularly relevant given the demographic's significant presence in the electorate. Data indicates that Gen Z accounted for approximately 41% of voters in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, with a large portion supporting the BJP and NDA. The BJP remains confident in retaining its support base through its emphasis on jobs, skills, and youth-focused schemes.

These political exchanges highlight the ongoing battle for the support of young voters and the differing interpretations of their role in shaping India's political landscape.
