In light of the escalating unrest in Nepal, the Indian government has issued a travel advisory urging its citizens to defer all non-essential travel to the country until the situation stabilizes. This advisory comes as Nepal grapples with widespread protests sparked by a deadly crackdown on demonstrators, resulting in significant political turmoil and public safety concerns.

The advisory issued by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) emphasizes the need for Indian citizens currently in Nepal to exercise extreme caution. They are advised to remain in their current residences, avoid venturing out into the streets, and adhere to all safety guidelines issued by local authorities and the Indian Embassy in Kathmandu. The MEA has also expressed deep concern over the volatile situation, appealing to all parties involved to exercise restraint and seek peaceful resolutions through dialogue.

The unrest in Nepal, dubbed the "Gen Z uprising," stems from widespread discontent over issues such as corruption, nepotism, and restrictions on social media. The protests intensified following a government crackdown that resulted in at least 19 fatalities, leading to Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli's resignation. Indefinite curfews have been imposed in Kathmandu and other major cities in an attempt to quell the demonstrations.

In response to the deteriorating situation, several Indian airlines, including Air India, IndiGo, SpiceJet and Nepal Airlines have announced the cancellation of flights to and from Kathmandu. Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu has also faced temporary closures due to the unrest, further disrupting travel plans. Air India has offered passengers with confirmed bookings to and from Kathmandu a one-time waiver on rescheduling charges for tickets issued up to September 9, valid until September 11, 2025.

Aviation analytics firm Cirium reported that there were 208 flights per week scheduled between India and Kathmandu in September. With the cancellation of flights by major Indian carriers, a significant number of travelers are expected to be affected.

The Indian government is closely monitoring the developments in Nepal and has expressed its condolences for the loss of life. As a close friend and neighbor, India has urged all parties to maintain calm and prioritize the safety and well-being of civilians. Indian citizens requiring assistance in Nepal can contact the Indian Embassy in Kathmandu via helpline numbers +977 – 980 860 2881 and +977 – 981 032 6134.

Given the ongoing instability and the potential for further disruptions, Indian citizens are strongly advised to heed the travel advisory and postpone any non-essential trips to Nepal until the situation normalizes. Those currently in Nepal should remain vigilant, stay informed, and follow the guidance of local authorities and the Indian Embassy to ensure their safety and security.
