C.P. Radhakrishnan, backed by the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), has been elected as the 15th Vice President of India, succeeding Jagdeep Dhankhar. The veteran BJP leader secured a decisive victory over opposition INDIA bloc nominee Justice B. Sudershan Reddy.
Radhakrishnan garnered 452 votes, exceeding expectations and indicating potential cross-voting in his favor. Justice Reddy received 300 votes. The election saw a high turnout of 98.20%, with 767 Members of Parliament (MPs) casting their votes out of 781.
Radhakrishnan, a former Governor of Maharashtra, described his victory as a triumph of "nationalistic ideology". He emphasized the need to prioritize development over politics to achieve a "Viksit Bharat" (Developed India) by 2047. He stated that while both the ruling and opposition parties are important in a democracy, it's crucial to put politics aside and concentrate on development once elections are concluded.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Radhakrishnan, expressing confidence that he will strengthen constitutional values and enhance parliamentary discourse. President Droupadi Murmu also extended her congratulations, noting Radhakrishnan's rich experience in public life and anticipating his significant contribution to the nation's progress.
Justice Reddy accepted the outcome, while vowing to continue the "ideological battle". The Congress party, while congratulating Radhakrishnan, also framed the contest as an "ideological battle".
The election results have sparked debate regarding opposition unity, particularly after a Congress leader claimed 100% turnout from all 315 opposition MPs, a figure that doesn't align with the votes received by Justice Reddy. This discrepancy has led to speculation about potential cross-voting in favor of Radhakrishnan, raising questions about internal fissures within the INDIA bloc.
Radhakrishnan's political journey began with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and Bharatiya Jana Sangh before he joined the BJP. He served as the BJP's Tamil Nadu state president and held parliamentary positions, including Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee. He is also a two-time MP from Coimbatore.
Radhakrishnan's win has been attributed to his extensive experience in politics and governance. As Vice President, he will also serve as the ex-officio Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, a role that demands neutrality and the ability to conduct parliamentary proceedings smoothly. His colleagues expect him to enhance decorum within the House and consolidate democratic workings.
Radhakrishnan's election highlights the ongoing ideological contest between the NDA and the opposition, with Radhakrishnan asserting the victory of nationalistic ideology. His emphasis on development and unity suggests a focus on national progress during his tenure as Vice President.
