The West Bengal Assembly witnessed tumultuous scenes recently as BJP MLAs were forcibly removed from the House, leading to strong condemnation from both the opposition and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. The incident occurred during a session addressing a government resolution concerning alleged atrocities against Bengali migrant workers.
Tensions escalated when BJP legislators began chanting slogans, questioning the suspension of the Leader of Opposition, Suvendu Adhikari, which had occurred earlier in the week. This prompted a sharp response from the treasury benches. Speaker Biman Banerjee called in marshals to evict BJP MLA and party's chief whip, Sankar Ghosh, following his suspension for allegedly creating a ruckus. Visuals emerged of marshals physically removing Ghosh from the Assembly.
The removal of the BJP MLAs sparked outrage among the opposition. Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari, who was not present during the initial scuffle, strongly criticized the actions, claiming that democracy had been murdered by the Mamata Banerjee-led government. He accused the marshals of using excessive force and alleged that several BJP MLAs were injured in the melee. The BJP has accused Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and her government of stifling opposition voices and treating them unfairly. BJP leader Amit Malviya described the government's actions as authoritarian, likening the situation in West Bengal to an undeclared emergency.
In response, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee launched a scathing attack on the BJP, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and Home Minister Amit Shah. She accused the BJP of being "anti-Bengal" and a "Bangla-Barodi party" that is intent on harassing the people of the state. Banerjee also accused the BJP of blocking discussions on the harassment of Bengalis and said she is not against Hindi, but the BJP is anti-Bengali. Furthermore, she warned that a day would come when not a single BJP MLA would be in the House, predicting that the people would throw them out of power and the Modi-Shah government at the Centre would soon collapse.
The events in the West Bengal Assembly are the latest in a series of clashes between the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the opposition BJP. There have been accusations of the ruling party silencing opposition, prompting allegations of authoritarianism against Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. The BJP has, on multiple occasions, accused the TMC government of suppressing dissent and misusing legislative procedures to silence opposition voices.
The Speaker's decision to expunge certain remarks made by BJP lawmakers and subsequent suspension of MLAs have further fueled the conflict. The BJP has also protested against the Speaker's decision to block BJP legislators from accessing assembly documents. These incidents have led to accusations from the BJP that the TMC is attempting to stifle the opposition and prevent them from raising important issues in the Assembly. The TMC, on the other hand, has accused the BJP of unruly behavior and disrupting House proceedings.
