The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued warnings for heavy rainfall across several states in India, forecasting widespread rain and thunderstorms until September 15, 2025. The weather patterns are attributed to multiple active weather systems over central and eastern India.
Affected Regions:
- Northeast India: A wet spell with thunderstorms and heavy showers is expected to intensify from September 12 to 15, affecting Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura. Light to moderate rain is predicted in these states until September 11.
- East and Central India: Odisha, Bihar, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, and Sikkim are likely to experience isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall. Chhattisgarh may also witness heavy showers.
- South India: Widespread rains are expected, with moderate to heavy spells in some areas of Bengaluru on September 14 and 15.
- Gujarat: After recent heavy rains, some relief is expected, but light to moderate showers and thundershowers are likely to continue in North Gujarat, South Gujarat, Saurashtra, and parts of Kutch. Intermittent showers may occur in districts including Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar, Banaskantha, Patan, Vadodara, Surat, Rajkot, Jamnagar, Junagadh, and Bhavnagar. Comparatively higher rainfall activity is expected in South Gujarat districts like Navsari, Valsad, Bharuch, and Narmada towards the weekend.
- Delhi-NCR: Partly cloudy skies with intermittent light rain are expected to continue. Maximum temperatures are expected to range from 33°C to 36°C, while minimum temperatures will be around 23–26°C.
- Uttar Pradesh: A period of heavy rain may commence from September 11, particularly in eastern Uttar Pradesh, with strong winds. Western parts of the state are expected to remain cloudy and humid.
Weather Systems:
The forecast is influenced by several weather systems, including a weakening depression over Pakistan, cyclonic circulations in eastern and southern India, and troughs extending across central and coastal areas. The depression over southeast Pakistan is expected to weaken into a low-pressure area and move southwestwards. It is likely to re-emerge into the northeast Arabian Sea before moving westwards.
Advisories:
Farmers, commuters, and local administrations are advised to remain alert for heavy showers and thunderstorms, especially in Odisha, Northeast India, and parts of the Western Ghats. Residents in Bengaluru are advised to prepare for potential traffic disruptions and waterlogging as rainfall increases later in the week.
