Gigi Hadid recently revealed that she auditioned for the role of Rapunzel in Disney's live-action remake of "Tangled". In a Vogue cover story alongside Kendall Jenner, Hadid shared that she even took singing lessons during Fashion Month to prepare for the audition.
The live-action "Tangled" remake was confirmed to be in development in December 2024, with Michael Gracey, the director of "The Greatest Showman," attached, and Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, who wrote "Thor: Love and Thunder," working on the screenplay. However, the project was put on hold in early 2025 after the poor performance of Disney's "Snow White" remake. While not formally canceled, the future of "Tangled" remains uncertain as Disney reassesses its remake projects.
Hadid told Jenner that she "was really proud of [her] scene". However, she also admitted, "I knew they were going to go with a real singer". Despite not landing the role, Hadid felt good about her performance and wanted to challenge herself outside of modeling. "What do we do in this job anymore that scares us?" she asked Jenner. Jenner responded by saying, "I'm stoked. I need to see".
Hadid's pursuit of the role was inspired by her boyfriend, Bradley Cooper, who has encouraged her to explore acting. Hadid has primarily appeared as herself in projects like "Ocean's 8" and various reality shows.
Corey Mylchreest, known for "My Oxford Year" and "Queen Charlotte," also auditioned, reportedly for the role of Flynn Rider. However, his experience was less positive. Mylchreest joked in an interview with Seventeen that his audition was so bad that he deleted the footage, burned the phone it was filmed on, burned the room he did it in, and then burned himself. He added that he was told they wanted someone with singing experience.
The fact that Hadid, primarily known for modeling, auditioned for Rapunzel indicates that the live-action remake was in a meaningful stage of development. The studio was considering major names for the role, suggesting they were aiming for star power. However, it is unclear if "Tangled" will move forward and whether the original creative vision will remain.
Some reports suggest that the "Snow White" remake's failure may be to blame for the "Tangled" project being scrapped. The studio may be rethinking its approach to live-action remakes after the backlash and poor box office performance of "Snow White". Despite the uncertainty surrounding "Tangled," another live-action remake, "Moana," is still scheduled for release in July 2026.
