Prime Minister Narendra Modi has condemned the violation of Qatar's sovereignty following Israeli attacks on Hamas leaders in Doha. Modi conveyed his concerns to the Amir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al-Thani, emphasizing India's opposition to any escalation in West Asia.
The condemnation follows Israeli military strikes in Doha targeting Hamas leaders who were engaged in discussions regarding a new ceasefire proposal for Gaza. These strikes, which Qatar has decried as a "reckless criminal attack" and a "flagrant violation" of its sovereignty and security, have triggered widespread international condemnation.
Modi, in a statement posted on social media platform X, asserted India's support for resolving issues through dialogue and diplomacy, while avoiding further escalation. He also reiterated India's firm stance against terrorism in all its forms, emphasizing the country's commitment to peace and stability in the region.
Reports indicate that the Israeli strikes resulted in casualties, including the death of the son and aide of senior Hamas leader Khalil al-Hayya. Qatar has reported that a security officer was also among the deceased. Sheikh Tamim has spoken with US President Donald Trump, who also conveyed his "strong condemnation" of the attack on Qatar's sovereignty.
India's initial response to the Israeli strikes, conveyed through the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), expressed deep concern and called for restraint. The MEA emphasized the importance of ensuring that peace and security in West Asia are not endangered.
Modi also acknowledged and appreciated Qatar's role in promoting regional peace and stability, particularly its mediation efforts in Gaza aimed at achieving a ceasefire and securing the release of hostages. Sheikh Tamim expressed his gratitude to Modi for India's solidarity with Qatar. The two leaders also reviewed the bilateral relations between India and Qatar, expressing satisfaction with the progress in the India-Qatar Strategic Partnership and pledging to deepen cooperation across various sectors. They agreed to maintain close communication in the future.
