Manchester United's WCL Qualifying Hopes Dented After First-Leg Loss to Brann: A Disappointing Performance.

Manchester United's Women's Champions League aspirations suffered a setback as they fell 1-0 to SK Brann in the first leg of their qualifying round match in Bergen, Norway. Ingrid Stenevik's late goal, scored from a header off a free-kick in the 77th minute, gave the Norwegian side a crucial advantage heading into the second leg.

The defeat leaves Manchester United with work to do in the return leg at Leigh Sports Village on September 18th if they hope to advance to the Women's Champions League group stage for the first time. To reach the main draw, Marc Skinner's team must overturn the deficit to join fellow English clubs Chelsea and Arsenal in the competition's new league phase.

The trip to Bergen was further complicated when some players' boots went missing in transit. While the club investigated the incident, replacement boots were quickly secured, ensuring all players could participate.

Despite the challenges, Manchester United created several scoring opportunities throughout the match but struggled to find the net. Brann's goalkeeper, Selma Panengstuen, proved to be a formidable obstacle, denying the Red Devils on multiple occasions. Ella Toone had several chances, including a shot saved in the 23rd minute and a header that went over the bar.

United were without key players Gabby George and Fridolina Rolfo for the first leg due to injury. Skinner had mentioned prior to the match that the pair were close to returning, but not fit enough to make the trip to Norway. However, he indicated they could be available for selection for the Women's Super League match against London City Lionesses. Simi Awujo and Leah Galton were also unavailable.

Brann, who play in the Toppserien, Norway's highest division of women's football, finished second last season. To reach this stage of the Champions League qualifying process, they defeated Inter Milan and Braga. Last year, they reached the competition's group stages, finishing second to Lyon before being eliminated by Barcelona in the knockout stages.

The match was broadcast live on MUTV, except for viewers in Norway due to local broadcasting restrictions. Liam Bradford and Ben Thornley provided live radio commentary. Looking ahead to the second leg, Manchester United will need to improve their finishing and defensive solidity to overcome Brann and secure their place in the Women's Champions League group stage.
