Prime Minister Narendra Modi has conveyed his congratulations to Sushila Karki on her appointment as the interim Prime Minister of Nepal. Modi's message underscores India's dedication to Nepal's peace, progress, and prosperity. Karki was sworn in as Nepal's first woman Prime Minister following the resignation of KP Sharma Oli amidst widespread protests.

Modi, speaking from Imphal, Manipur, emphasized the deep-rooted connections between India and Nepal, describing Nepal as a "close friend". He noted the shared history and faith that bind the two nations. Modi expressed his confidence that Karki's leadership would pave the way for peace, stability, and prosperity in Nepal. He also lauded her appointment as a "very good example of women's empowerment".

The appointment of Sushila Karki as interim Prime Minister comes after weeks of political instability in Nepal, triggered by youth-led protests against corruption and government policies. These protests led to the resignation of the previous Prime Minister, KP Sharma Oli, and the dissolution of Parliament. Karki, formerly the Chief Justice of Nepal, is seen as a figure of integrity and a consensus candidate capable of leading the country through this transitional period. She is also widely known for her firm stance against corruption during her tenure as Chief Justice from 2016 to 2017.

India's Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has also welcomed the formation of the interim government, expressing hope that it will foster peace and stability in Nepal. The MEA reiterated India's commitment to working closely with Nepal for the well-being and prosperity of both countries.

PM Modi acknowledged the resilience of the Nepali people and praised the youth for upholding democratic values during the recent turbulent times. He highlighted the efforts of young Nepalis who have been cleaning and painting the streets, viewing their actions as a "clear indication of Nepal's new rise".

India and Nepal share a 1,751 km long border, with deep-rooted people-to-people links and commonalities in religion, language, and culture. These close ties are reinforced by frequent high-level visits and exchanges, reflecting India's "Neighborhood First" policy. India has also played a crucial role in Nepal's evolution from a monarchy to a democratic republic.

The 1950 Treaty of Peace and Friendship between India and Nepal establishes a close strategic relationship between the two countries. India is Nepal's largest trading partner and the largest source of investment in Nepal. Cooperation extends to various sectors, including water, sanitation, hygiene, and power. India actively supports the modernization of the Nepal Army and conducts joint military exercises to enhance coordination and capabilities.
