Amit Khare, a retired IAS officer and former advisor to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has been appointed as the Secretary to Vice President C P Radhakrishnan. The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet approved Khare's appointment on Sunday.

Khare's tenure will be on a contract basis for three years, with the rank and pay of a Secretary, effective from the date he assumes charge.

A 1985-batch IAS officer from the Jharkhand cadre, Khare has held several key positions in both the Central and state governments throughout his career. Before this appointment, he served as an Advisor to the Prime Minister since October 12, 2021, handling social sector-related matters in the Prime Minister's Office.

Khare's career includes a six-year stint as Joint Secretary, Higher Education (August 2008-August 2014), where he was involved with UNESCO, education policy, and book promotion and copyright issues. He also served as Secretary, HRD, Government of Jharkhand, and as Vice Chancellor of Ranchi University. As Development Commissioner and Additional Chief Secretary, Finance-cum-Planning, in Jharkhand, he introduced significant reforms, including pre-budget consultations, performance budgeting, gender budgeting, sectoral budgeting, financial inclusion, Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT), and the implementation of various Central and State sector schemes.

In the Central Government, Khare joined as Secretary, Information and Broadcasting, on May 31, 2018. He later served as Secretary, School Education and Literacy, and Secretary, Higher Education. He was a key member of the team that formulated and implemented the National Education Policy, 2020.

Amit Khare is an alumnus of St. Stephen's College, Delhi, and holds a postgraduate degree in Business Administration from IIM-Ahmedabad. He is also known for his role in unravelling Bihar's fodder scam.
