Vehicle owners may soon get a chance to clear their pending traffic fines with substantial rebates, offering a significant opportunity to ease financial burdens and reduce legal backlogs. Several states have recently implemented or are considering schemes to provide discounts on outstanding traffic challans.

In Delhi, the government is likely to introduce a one-time amnesty scheme that could offer a 50-70% waiver on outstanding traffic challans. The scheme, expected to roll out in the coming months, aims to reduce the massive backlog of unpaid challans and ease the burden on the judicial system. Officials have indicated that violators may be given a 2-3 month window to pay the reduced fines. This initiative will apply to both traffic and transport challans, covering non-serious violations such as expired pollution clearance certificates, wrong-side driving, overloading, helmetless riding, red-light jumping, and speeding. Serious offenses like drunk driving, unauthorized driving, and driving without a valid license will not be included in the scheme.

Karnataka recently concluded a successful traffic fine rebate program. The Karnataka government had announced a limited-time 50% rebate on pending e-challans, effective from August 21 to September 12, 2025. This initiative resulted in the collection of over ₹100 crore in just 21 days, with over 30 lakh cases resolved. The scheme allowed vehicle owners to pay their fines through various platforms, including online portals, the KSP app, BTP Astra app, Karnataka One, and Bangalore One websites. The overwhelming response led to discussions about potentially extending the scheme, although concerns were raised that frequent discounts might encourage delays in fine payments.

Bengaluru witnessed a massive response to its 50% traffic fine rebate, collecting over ₹54.30 crore in just 17 days. The scheme, which officially began on August 21 and ran until September 12, 2025, helped settle over 19.36 lakh traffic violations across the city. The Bengaluru Traffic Police lauded the public's enthusiastic participation and thanked citizens for their accountability.

The National Lok Adalat also presented an opportunity for citizens to resolve minor traffic violations at reduced rates or get waivers. On September 13, 2025, vehicle owners across India could settle pending minor traffic challans with rebates during the Lok Adalat. Eligible violations included driving without a seat belt, riding without a helmet, jumping red lights, overspeeding, not having a valid PUC certificate, wrong parking, ignoring traffic signs, absence of a vehicle fitness certificate, no number plates, or driving in the wrong lane. To participate, applicants were required to register online via the official NALSA portal and bring the necessary documents on the hearing day.

These initiatives demonstrate a growing trend towards offering relief to vehicle owners burdened with pending traffic fines. By providing rebates and discounts, governments aim to reduce the backlog of cases, encourage compliance, and ease the financial strain on citizens.
