The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has widened its investigation into illegal online betting apps, summoning former cricketers Yuvraj Singh and Robin Uthappa for questioning. This action follows similar summons issued to Suresh Raina and Shikhar Dhawan in recent weeks. The ED suspects these apps of defrauding investors and evading substantial taxes.

Yuvraj Singh is scheduled to appear before the ED on September 23, while Robin Uthappa was summoned on September 22. Both have been asked to provide their statements under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) in connection to a case linked to the online platform 1xBet.

The ED's investigation focuses on the alleged illegal activities of online betting apps, particularly 1xBet, which is accused of duping numerous people and investors of significant sums and evading large amounts in taxes. The agency is scrutinizing financial transactions associated with these platforms to uncover potential violations of anti-money laundering laws. The probe includes examining whether funds funneled through these platforms were used for laundering illicit proceeds and whether taxes on winnings and operations were properly accounted for.

1xBet is described as a globally recognized bookmaker with 18 years of experience in the betting industry. The platform allows customers to bet on thousands of sporting events, with its website and app available in 70 languages.

The ED is also investigating the role of celebrities in promoting these apps. Earlier this year, the ED questioned Harbhajan Singh regarding his involvement with these platforms. The agency believes that endorsements from celebrities provide these apps with "massive visibility," potentially leading to the exploitation of individuals. The ED is concerned that these platforms, while presenting themselves as hosting skill-based games, may be using rigged algorithms that classify them as gambling operations under Indian law.

The investigation has also extended to other figures, including actor Sonu Sood, who has been summoned for questioning on September 24. Furthermore, the ED has recorded statements from former TMC MP and actor Mimi Chakraborty, and Bengali actor Ankush Hazra recently appeared before the ED. Urvashi Rautela, who is reportedly the India brand ambassador of 1xBet, is yet to appear before the agency.

The scale of illegal betting app business in India is estimated to be worth over $100 billion and is growing rapidly, despite efforts by authorities to crack down on such platforms. It is estimated that around 11 crore Indians use these apps daily.
