Gaganpreet Kaur, the accused in the recent BMW accident case that resulted in the death of a Finance Ministry official, Navjot Singh, and severely injured his wife, Sandeep Kaur, claims the crash was accidental and unintentional. The incident occurred in Delhi's Dhaula Kuan area when the BMW allegedly driven by Gaganpreet hit the motorcycle Navjot Singh was riding with his wife.
Following the accident, Gaganpreet, a 38-year-old Gurugram resident and mother of two, has been arrested and faces charges including culpable homicide not amounting to murder, rash driving, and concealing evidence. She was initially sent to two days of judicial custody by a Delhi court. Gaganpreet has filed a bail application, with the court scheduling a hearing for September 17 and requesting replies from the Delhi Police and the victim's family.
In her defense, Gaganpreet is arguing that the accident was unintentional. Her bail plea emphasizes her family ties, lack of prior criminal record, and full cooperation with the ongoing investigation. Her lawyer, Vikas Pahwa, has pointed out inconsistencies between the police's initial statement and the First Information Report (FIR). He also noted the absence of CCTV footage presented in court.
A key point of contention is why Gaganpreet transported the injured couple to Nulife Hospital in GTB Nagar, approximately 19-22 kilometers away from the accident site, instead of a closer medical facility. Gaganpreet stated that she panicked and only knew of that particular hospital because her children had been treated there during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, the victim's wife, Sandeep Kaur, alleges that she repeatedly pleaded to be taken to a nearby hospital, but her requests were ignored. Sandeep Kaur stated in her FIR that Gaganpreet "ignored my requests and deliberately delayed medical help". She also claimed that they were kept waiting outside on a stretcher.
Adding to the controversy, the victim's family alleges that Gaganpreet has connections to Nulife Hospital. Republic Media Network reported that Gaganpreet's father is a director at Nulife Hospital. The police are investigating whether Gaganpreet's father knows the director of the hospital or has any connection with it. Nulife Hospital confirmed that Navjot Singh was brought in dead, and his injured wife was stable and later referred to another hospital at her request.
The investigation has revealed that Gaganpreet was not under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident. Her blood sample report came back negative for alcohol. Authorities have seized both the BMW and the motorcycle involved in the crash and conducted a forensic examination of the accident site. Eyewitnesses reported that the BMW first struck the central verge before colliding with Singh's motorcycle, which then crashed into a bus. Investigators suspect that the car was being driven at a high speed and that Gaganpreet lost control.
Navjot Singh, a Deputy Secretary in the Department of Economic Affairs, was returning home from Bangla Sahib Gurudwara with his wife when the accident occurred. His wife sustained multiple injuries and a fracture and remains under treatment.
