The city of Dehradun and surrounding areas in Uttarakhand, India, are grappling with the aftermath of a severe cloudburst that triggered flash floods. The heavy rainfall caused the Tamsa river to overflow, inundating the revered Tapkeshwar Mahadev temple. Water surged into the courtyard, reaching the statue of Hanuman, though the inner sanctum remained untouched. Several areas, including Sahastradhara and the IT Park, experienced significant waterlogging and damage. A key bridge was destroyed, and houses and shops in the vicinity were damaged in Sahastradhara. Two people have been reported missing.

The Chandrabhaga river in Rishikesh also swelled, overflowing onto the highway and stranding vehicles. The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) rescued three people trapped by the rising waters. Authorities have urged residents to avoid going near rivers and streams while the water levels remain high. Schools and Anganwadi centers in Dehradun district are closed as a precautionary measure. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has deployed police and SDRF teams to assist with evacuation, relief, and safety operations, stating that the priority is the safety of residents and providing immediate assistance.

In other news, the Asia Cup 2025 match between India and Pakistan has been marred by a controversy after India's players refused to participate in the customary post-match handshake. According to reports, India's captain, Suryakumar Yadav, stated that the decision was made to honor victims of a recent attack and Indian forces. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has lodged an official complaint with the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) over the incident. Some reports suggest that the match referee, Andy Pycroft, had asked the captains to skip the pre-toss handshake. Following the incident, Pakistan coach Mike Hesson called the snub “disappointing”. Pakistan's manager lodged a protest with the ICC match referee, and Pakistan captain Agha did not speak at the post-match captain's chat with the host broadcaster. A senior BCCI official said that shaking hands with the opponent at the end of a cricket match is just a goodwill gesture and not a mandatory rule. The PCB chairman has threatened to withdraw from the remaining Asia Cup 2025 matches if the match referee is not removed.
