Narendra Modi has achieved a significant milestone in Indian politics, becoming the second-longest serving Prime Minister in consecutive terms, surpassing Indira Gandhi's record. As of July 25, 2025, Modi had completed 4,078 days in office, exceeding Gandhi's 4,077 days. This achievement places him behind only Jawaharlal Nehru, India's first Prime Minister, who served for 16 years and 286 days.

Modi's journey to this point has been marked by several key moments and political strategies. His political career began in Gujarat, where he served as Chief Minister from 2001 to 2014, becoming the longest-serving CM in the state's history. He cultivated a reputation as an able administrator, credited with the state's rapid economic growth.

His ascent to national politics was propelled by the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) landslide victory in the 2014 general elections, where the party secured 272 Lok Sabha seats on its own. A key element of this victory was the "Ab Ki Baar Modi Sarkar" campaign, which focused on Modi's personality and leadership. Surveys at the time indicated that Modi had a higher recall value than the BJP itself, leading the campaign to be centered around him. The slogan "Ab Ki Baar Modi Sarkar" was a creation of the BJP's election war room, with contributors including Nisheeth Sharan and others. The slogan resonated with the public and became a popular election catchphrase.

In the 2019 elections, the BJP, under Modi's leadership, further improved its tally to 303 seats. Although the party fell short of an outright majority in the 2024 elections, it emerged as the single largest party and formed the government with the support of its National Democratic Alliance (NDA) allies. Modi is the first and only non-Congress prime minister to complete two full terms and secure a third successive mandate. He is also the first Prime Minister born after India gained independence in 1947 and remains the longest-serving Prime Minister from a non-Hindi-speaking state.

His government has launched several significant initiatives, including "Make in India" to boost manufacturing, "Digital India" to enhance digital infrastructure, and "Swachh Bharat" to promote cleanliness. Other key initiatives include the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) for financial inclusion, and the Goods and Services Tax (GST), unifying India's indirect tax system. Modi's government has also focused on women's empowerment, with initiatives like Beti Bachao Beti Padhao and the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana.

Modi's foreign policy initiatives have also been notable. He began his first term in office in the presence of heads of state from SAARC nations and invited BIMSTEC leaders at the start of his second term. He was the first Indian Prime Minister to embark on a bilateral visit to Nepal after 17 years, to Australia after 28 years, and to Fiji and UAE after more than 30 years.

While Modi's tenure has been marked by these achievements, it has also faced challenges and controversies. Some of his Hindu nationalist policies and economic reforms have been controversial. For example, the revocation of the special status of Jammu and Kashmir in 2019 drew intense criticism. Additionally, the farm laws passed in 2020 led to widespread protests.

As Modi embarks on his third term, the focus remains on his ability to deliver on his promises and address the challenges facing India. In recent campaigns, the slogan "Modi ki Guarantee" has been used to highlight the promises made by the Prime Minister. The BJP has also used slogans like "Ab ki baar 400 paar".
