Mikael Backlund, the Calgary Flames' captain, has signed a two-year, $6.5 million contract extension with the team. The contract, which carries an average annual value of $3.25 million, will begin in the 2026-27 season and run through 2027-28 season.

The announcement was made on Wednesday, as training camp began. Backlund, who turned 36 in March, is currently in the final year of his two-year, $9 million contract. He is set to become an unrestricted free agent after the 2025-26 season.

Backlund has spent his entire 17-season NHL career with the Flames, after being drafted 24th overall by the team in 2007. He has played 1,066 games for Calgary, ranking second in franchise history. He also ranks seventh in points (563), and is tied for sixth in goals (215). On October 30, 2024, Backlund played his 1,000th NHL game. He was named the 21st captain in Flames history in September 2023.

Internationally, Backlund has represented Sweden on a number of occasions, including five times at the World Championships, winning gold in 2018. He has also played at the World Juniors and World Cup of Hockey.

Known for his two-way play, Backlund has been in the Selke Trophy conversation since 2016-17. He was named an alternate captain in 2018-19. Throughout his career, Backlund has been known for his ability to elevate his linemates, with the "Backlund Bump" becoming a known phenomenon.

The extension ensures that Backlund will be on the Flames' roster when the team moves to Scotia Place in 2027-28. It also gives him a strong chance to pass Jarome Iginla for the franchise lead in all-time games played.
