India has reaffirmed its commitment to promoting peace, security, and stability in Afghanistan at a recent United Nations Security Council (UNSC) briefing. India's engagement is rooted in its historical and civilizational ties with the Afghan people and its role as a contiguous neighbor. India closely monitors the situation in Afghanistan due to its impact on the region.
At the UNSC briefing on Afghanistan, India highlighted several key areas of focus:
India has actively participated in meetings of Special Envoys on Afghanistan hosted by Qatar in Doha. Furthermore, bilateral trade and commerce between India and Afghanistan are ongoing, facilitated by the Chabahar port in Iran.
In March 2025, India's Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Parvathaneni Harish, stated that discussions regarding bilateral relations with the Taliban regime have occurred, emphasizing the importance of people-to-people connections as the foundation of their engagement. These discussions also covered strengthening sports cooperation, particularly in cricket, and promoting the use of the Chabahar port for trade, commerce, and humanitarian aid. The Afghan side has expressed gratitude to India for its continued engagement and support.
India's commitment to Afghanistan's reconstruction is evident through its numerous development partnerships across all provinces. India has assured its unwavering support to the people of Afghanistan and pledged full cooperation in initiatives to assist Afghan society. While remaining committed to the Afghan people, India abstained from a UN resolution on Afghanistan in July 2025, citing concerns over terror sanctuaries.
