The Tata Altroz has achieved a significant milestone by becoming the first CNG car in India to secure a 5-star rating from Bharat NCAP. This achievement underscores Tata Motors' commitment to safety across its range of fuel options and reinforces the Altroz's position as India's safest hatchback. The announcement was made following rigorous crash tests conducted under the Bharat New Car Assessment Programme (Bharat NCAP).
Bharat NCAP is India's own safety rating program, launched in August 2023, similar to Global NCAP but tailored to Indian driving conditions and regulations. It is a government-backed initiative designed to assess the safety performance of cars and SUVs sold in India. The program assigns star ratings to vehicles based on their performance in crash tests, providing consumers with transparent and reliable safety information. The star rating ranges from 1 to 5, with 5 stars indicating the highest level of safety.
The Altroz achieved impressive scores in the Bharat NCAP tests, securing 29.65 out of 32 for Adult Occupant Protection (AOP) and 44.90 out of 49 for Child Occupant Protection (COP). These scores highlight the vehicle's ability to protect both adult and child occupants in the event of a crash. The model tested included the Pure CNG MT, CRTV S CNG MT, and ACCOMP S DMT variants, all equipped with standard safety features such as dual airbags, seatbelt pretensioners, and ISOFIX mounts.
The Tata Altroz is built on Tata's ALFA (Agile Light Flexible Advanced) architecture with Diamond Strength Safety Shield, which provides enhanced structural rigidity and crash resistance. The frontal offset deformable barrier test yielded 15.55 out of 16 points, while the side impact test scored 14.11 out of 16, demonstrating stable structure and footwell performance. The side pole test confirmed full head protection. For child safety, rearward-facing ISOFIX-mounted child seats for 18-month-old and 3-year-old dummies provided full protection in both frontal and side impact assessments.
The Altroz is now the only hatchback in India to achieve a 5-star Bharat NCAP rating across petrol, diesel, and CNG powertrains. It was also the first hatchback to secure a 5-star rating from Global NCAP in 2020. This makes it the first car in its segment and body style to achieve the highest safety rating under the Bharat NCAP protocol across all its powertrains, and the only CNG-powered car to secure the highest safety rating.
The Bharat NCAP protocol evaluates vehicles based on Adult Occupant Protection (AOP), Child Occupant Protection (COP), and Safety Assist Technologies (SAT). These parameters are assessed through various crash tests, including frontal impact, side impact, and pedestrian protection tests. The program also evaluates standard safety features such as airbags, seatbelt reminders, Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), and Electronic Stability Control (ESC).
Mohan Savarkar, Vice President & Chief Product Officer, Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles, stated that the Altroz has always been a pioneer in the premium hatchback segment and has redefined benchmarks by making safety accessible to Indian families. He added that this achievement reaffirms Tata Motors' commitment to delivering cars that customers can depend on with confidence.
The Tata Altroz continues to stand out for its versatility, offering petrol, diesel, and twin-cylinder CNG options, paired with multiple transmissions, including a 5-speed manual, 5-speed AMT, and a 6-speed dual-clutch automatic (DCA). Performance highlights include an 88bhp 1.2-litre petrol, a 90bhp 1.5-litre diesel, and a 73.5bhp 1.2-litre CNG engine. The premium hatchback also offers features such as a 10.25-inch Harman infotainment system, fully digital instrument cluster, and wireless Android Auto/Apple CarPlay.
