During his address to the UN General Assembly on Tuesday, President Donald Trump declared that China and India are the "primary funders" of the ongoing war in Ukraine. He asserted that their continued purchase of Russian oil is助長 the conflict.
Trump stated that these nations, along with some NATO countries, are "funding the war against themselves" by not cutting off energy purchases from Russia. He expressed his displeasure upon discovering that even NATO countries had not significantly reduced their intake of Russian energy products. Trump argued that to effectively end the war, all nations, particularly European countries, must immediately cease all energy purchases from Russia. Otherwise, he believes efforts to resolve the conflict will be futile.
In response to India's continued purchase of Russian oil, the Trump administration has imposed an additional 25% tariff on New Delhi, bringing the total levies to 50%, among the highest in the world. India has decried these tariffs as "unjustified and unreasonable," asserting its right to safeguard its national interests and economic security like any major economy.
Trump also claimed that the war in Ukraine would not have started had he been president. He reiterated his claim of having stopped "seven wars in seven months," even suggesting he deserves a Nobel Peace Prize for his achievements. He criticized the UN for not helping in those situations, stating, "All I got from the United Nations was an escalator on the way up that stopped right in the middle".
Furthermore, Trump lambasted European allies for failing to halt oil purchases from Russia. He warned that unless Europe takes stronger measures, Washington would act alone. He also criticized the UN for "funding an assault" on Western nations through migration, saying some countries are "going to hell".
Despite his criticism, Trump expressed his belief that Ukraine could regain all territory lost to Russia since the 2022 invasion, particularly with the support of the European Union and NATO. He described the Russian economy as being in "terrible" condition and commended Ukraine for its resistance.
