Malayalam superstar Mohanlal has been honored with the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award, India's highest film accolade, at the 71st National Film Awards ceremony in New Delhi on Tuesday, September 23, 2025. The award, presented by President Droupadi Murmu, recognizes his exceptional contribution to Indian cinema over a career spanning more than four decades.

Mohanlal, often regarded as one of the greatest actors in Indian cinema, expressed deep humility and gratitude upon receiving the award. He dedicated the honor to the Malayalam film industry, its artists, directors, producers, and everyone who has supported him throughout his journey. He also thanked the Government of India, the President, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Minister for Information and Broadcasting, and the jury for selecting him.

In his acceptance speech, Mohanlal stated that the award was "not a dream come true moment; it goes well beyond the greats,". He further added, "As a representative of the Malayalam film industry, I am deeply humbled to be the youngest recipient and only the second ever from the state to be bestowed with this national recognition. This moment is not mine alone. It belongs to the entire Malayalam cinema fraternity. I see this award as a collective tribute to our industry, legacy, creativity, and resilience".

The auditorium erupted in a standing ovation as President Murmu conferred the award. Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw hailed Mohanlal as the "real OG" and switched to Malayalam to compliment the actor, drawing thunderous applause. Information and Broadcasting Secretary Sanjay Jaju recognized Mohanlal's enduring impact, stating, "For more than four decades, he has played many men in cinema. Yet in the hearts of millions, he will always be Lalettan".

Mohanlal's cinematic journey inspires generations. He has acted in over 400 films, not only in Malayalam but also in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Hindi. He has received several awards, including National Awards, Padma Shri, and Padma Bhushan.

The Dadasaheb Phalke Award ceremony also sparked discussions among fans, highlighting the award's significance and raising questions about recognition for other deserving actors. Some fans expressed surprise that Mohanlal's contemporary, Mammootty, has not yet received the award. However, Mammootty himself offered a heartfelt message, calling Mohanlal "more than a colleague, a brother, and an artist" and expressing his happiness and pride. Dulquer Salmaan, Mammootty's son, also congratulated Mohanlal on his profound impact on cinema.

Mohanlal's win has been hailed as a turning point for regional cinema, spotlighting Malayalam films on India's largest stage. The recognition reiterates how Mohanlal, through sheer artistry and humility, continues to inspire generations of actors and audiences alike.
