Ravi Laxmi Chitrakar, the wife of former Nepalese Prime Minister Jhalanath Khanal, has been flown to New Delhi, India, for advanced medical treatment after sustaining serious burn injuries during recent protests in Kathmandu.
On September 9, 2025, amidst escalating "Gen Z" demonstrations, a mob set fire to Khanal's house in the Dallu area of Kathmandu. Chitrakar was inside the residence when the incident occurred and suffered 15 percent burns as a result.
Following the incident, she was immediately rushed to Kirtipur Burn Hospital where she received initial treatment. However, due to the severity of her injuries, doctors recommended further treatment in New Delhi. According to family members, Chitrakar's left hand was severely damaged, and she developed a chest infection due to smoke inhalation that affected her lungs.
The "Gen Z" protests have intensified, leading to significant political turmoil in Nepal, including the resignation of Prime Minister KP Oli and the torching of government buildings such as the parliament and President's Office in Kathmandu.
Jhalanath Khanal served as the Prime Minister of Nepal from February to August 2011.
(It should be noted that some search results from September 10, 2025, incorrectly reported the death of Rajyalaxmi Chitrakar, wife of Jhalanath Khanal, due to the fire. However, more recent reports confirm that Ravi Laxmi Chitrakar, Khanal's wife, is receiving treatment in India.)
