A tragic boat accident off the coast of Beira, Mozambique, has resulted in the death of three Indian nationals, with five others still missing. Search and rescue operations are currently underway.
The incident occurred on Friday, October 17, 2025, during a routine crew transfer to the tanker "Sea Quest". The "Sea Quest", built in 2012 and previously known as 'STI Ruby', is operated by Scorpio Marine Management under the Marshall Islands flag. The service boat carrying the Indian crew capsized in the waters off Beira under circumstances that are still being investigated. There were 21 people on board the service boat.
As of the latest reports, 14 individuals have been reported safe, with five having been successfully rescued. One of the survivors is currently receiving medical treatment at a hospital in Beira. The condition of two of the survivors is critical. Among the missing is at least one individual of Malayali descent.
The Indian High Commission in Mozambique has acknowledged the incident and is providing assistance. "We convey our heartfelt condolences on the loss of lives, including of three Indian nationals, in a boat accident off Beira port," the High Commission stated. The mission is in contact with the families of the deceased and missing, extending all possible support.
Scorpio Marine Management has also released a statement, confirming the incident and stating that they are in close contact with the families of the missing crew members and local authorities. The company has alerted the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC), and the "Sea Quest," along with other ships in the area, are assisting in the search and rescue operation. Three of the rescued individuals received immediate medical attention aboard the "Sea Quest," and further medical support is being arranged. Scorpio Marine Management has promised a full investigation into the cause of the incident.
