Prime Minister Narendra Modi celebrated Diwali with the Indian Navy personnel aboard the INS Vikrant off the coast of Goa on Monday, continuing his decade-long tradition of spending the festival with the armed forces. Modi, dressed in traditional attire, interacted with the sailors and officers, sharing sweets and exchanging festive greetings.
Addressing the Navy personnel, Modi lauded their dedication and courage in safeguarding the nation's maritime interests. He described his visit as memorable and expressed his fortune in celebrating Diwali with the "brave soldiers of the Indian Navy". He emphasized the importance of their role and the sacrifices they make to protect the country. Modi also extended his Diwali greetings to the entire nation and especially to the families of the Navy personnel. He acknowledged that everyone wants to celebrate Diwali with their families, and that is why he came to celebrate with his "family" on the INS Vikrant.
The Prime Minister highlighted the significance of INS Vikrant, India's first indigenously built aircraft carrier, calling it a symbol of the country's growing self-reliance in defense production. He noted that the mere name of INS Vikrant caused sleepless nights for Pakistan. He commended the ship's capabilities and the crucial role it plays in ensuring maritime security. "These huge ships, speedy aircraft, and submarines are in place, but the valor you carry makes them truly tremendous. These ships might be made of iron, but when you are onboard, they become a live weapon," Modi said, underscoring the importance of the personnel manning the warship.
This year's Diwali celebration also highlighted Operation Sindoor. Modi spent the night on the INS Vikrant, gaining a firsthand understanding of the challenges and the spirit required to serve on the carrier. He expressed his appreciation for the immense energy and enthusiasm of the crew.
Prior to his visit to INS Vikrant, Modi took to X (formerly Twitter) to wish the country a Happy Diwali and promote the purchase of "Swadeshi" (Indian-made) products. He urged citizens to celebrate the hard work, creativity, and innovation of 140 crore Indians by buying Indian products and proudly declaring "Garv Se Kaho Yeh Swadeshi Hai!" (Say with pride, this is Indian!).
Meanwhile, across the country, Diwali was celebrated with traditional fervor. Border Security Force (BSF) personnel celebrated along the International Border in Jaisalmer, demonstrating unity and familial spirit. However, the festive atmosphere in Delhi was somewhat dampened by worsening air quality, leading to the implementation of Stage 2 of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP).
