Justice Sudhir Singh has been appointed as the Acting Chief Justice of the Patna High Court, effective October 23, 2025. The appointment was made by the President of India under Article 223 of the Constitution. Justice Singh will assume the responsibilities of the Chief Justice's office following the retirement of Chief Justice Pavankumar Bhimappa B. Bajanthri on October 22, 2025.
The Ministry of Law and Justice released the notification regarding Justice Singh's appointment on Tuesday. Copies of the notification have been sent to the Governor, Chief Minister, Chief Secretary, and other relevant officials. Justice Singh, the most senior judge of the High Court, is expected to ensure smooth judicial operations and administrative stability in the upcoming term.
Justice Singh's educational background includes schooling at Vikas Vidyalaya, Ranchi, followed by an intermediate degree and a bachelor's degree in Political Science from Patna College. He completed his law degree at Patna Law College. Enrolling as a lawyer in 1991, Justice Singh began his legal practice at the High Court. Before becoming a judge, he served as the Assistant Solicitor General for the Central Government in the High Court.
Justice Singh comes from a legal family. His father, Justice N.P. Singh, was a judge in the Supreme Court and later served as the Chairman of the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal after his retirement. Justice Sudhir Singh was initially appointed as an Additional Judge of the Patna High Court on April 15, 2015, and was sworn in as a permanent judge on April 20, 2016.
