RSS Chief: Enduring Societies Require Empathy and Culture, Not Just Laws, for Sustained Harmony.

Bengaluru: Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat emphasized on Friday that laws alone are insufficient to sustain a society, highlighting the critical roles of empathy, cultural rootedness, and a shared sense of belonging in fostering social harmony.

Bhagwat delivered these remarks at the valedictory ceremony of the silver jubilee celebrations of Nele Foundation, a care home for destitute children. He urged individuals to cultivate sensitivity and emotional connections within their communities. "A society does not function by law alone — it functions through empathy," he stated. "There must be a sense of belonging, and this feeling of belonging must be deeply experienced in the heart. It is our responsibility to keep that sensitivity awakened and alert within ourselves".

Bhagwat further commented on India's potential as a global leader if its society remains united. He pointed out that while many nations possess wealth, scientific advancements, knowledge, and military strength, India's unique heritage is centered on the concept of universal oneness. "There is something they do not have, which we do possess. This sense of oneness — this is our true identity and eternal nature,” Bhagwat said, noting that Indians have inherited this through their cultural traditions. He added that unity and empathy, which define India's identity, originate from the inner self and the consciousness that binds all existence.

Bhagwat also referenced scientific perspectives, noting the concept of a universal consciousness that pre-exists and pervades everything. He said that Indian ancestors preserved this idea through lived practice across generations, even amidst challenges.

Expressing optimism for India's future, Bhagwat hoped that a renewed sense of inner awareness would guide the nation's growth. "May Bharat grow, and in growing, may Bharat teach the world this sense of belonging and unity," he stated. He also commended organizations like Nele and various community groups for their contributions to society.

In August 2025, Bhagwat spoke at the inauguration of the Dharmjagran Nyas office in Nagpur, where he emphasized the importance of accepting all diversities. He stated that "Hindu dharma teaches us to follow the universal dharma of humanity," stressing that while paths may differ, the destination remains the same, and no one should try to change another's path. Bhagwat also highlighted India's responsibility to set an example of embracing diversity with respect, as Sanatan Dharma teaches.

In October 2025, Bhagwat said that ancient Indians propagated culture and science across the world without conquest or conversion. Speaking at the launch of the Arya Yug Vishay Kosh encyclopedia, he contrasted this approach with that of invaders who looted India and weakened its people by "looting the minds". He asserted that ancient Indians travelled from Mexico to Siberia, sharing science and culture with goodwill and a message of unity.
