Bypolls across eight assembly seats in six states and one Union Territory saw a mix of high to moderate voter turnout on Tuesday, November 11, 2025. The constituencies that participated in these by-elections included Budgam and Nagrota in Jammu & Kashmir, Anta in Rajasthan, Ghatshila in Jharkhand, Jubilee Hills in Telangana, Tarn Taran in Punjab, Dampa in Mizoram, and Nuapada in Odisha.
While most constituencies saw turnout broadly similar to previous elections, some experienced slight increases or decreases. Dampa in Mizoram recorded the highest turnout, while Jubilee Hills in Telangana had the lowest.
In Jammu & Kashmir, the average turnout across the Budgam and Nagrota seats was 62.5%. Budgam recorded a modest rise to 50.02% from 48.53% in October 2024, while Nagrota saw an increase to 75.08% from 72.74%. The National Conference (NC) competed against the BJP and PDP in these constituencies. The by-elections were necessitated after Omar Abdullah resigned from the Budgam assembly seat and retained the Ganderbal constituency, and the Nagrota seat was vacated after the demise of BJP leader and Nagrota MLA Devender Singh Rana.
Rajasthan's Anta constituency witnessed a high voter turnout, crossing the 80% mark. The seat fell vacant after BJP MLA Kanwar Lal Meena was disqualified following a conviction in a criminal case. The contest is primarily between Congress candidate Pramod Jain Bhaya and BJP's Morpal Suman.
Jharkhand's Ghatshila constituency saw polling at 74.62%, slightly below the 76.3% recorded last year. The seat became vacant after the death of state minister and sitting MLA Ramdas Soren. JMM’s Somesh Soren faced BJP’s Babulal Soren in the bypoll.
In Telangana, Jubilee Hills recorded a polling percentage of 48.43%, a slight increase from 47.58% in 2023. The bypoll was necessitated by the death of Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) MLA Maganti Gopinath. The key contest here is between Congress's Naveen Yadav and BRS's Sunitha.
Tarn Taran in Punjab experienced a sharp decline in voter turnout, with 60.95% compared to 66% in 2020.
Dampa in Mizoram registered the highest turnout among all constituencies, reaching 82.34%. The seat fell vacant following the death of MNF legislator Lalrintluanga Sailo.
Nuapada in Odisha saw a slightly higher polling percentage compared to the last election.
The counting of votes for all eight bypoll seats is scheduled for November 14.
