Tuchel Prioritizes World Cup Availability Over Result in Albania Qualifier

Tirana, Albania – England manager Thomas Tuchel has stated he would prefer his team to suffer a defeat against Albania in their final World Cup qualifier than risk any player receiving a red card that could lead to a ban at the start of next summer's tournament. Speaking ahead of Sunday's match at the Air Albania Arena, Tuchel emphasized the importance of discipline and maintaining a full squad for the World Cup.

England have already secured their place in the 2026 FIFA World Cup and boast a perfect record in qualifying, with seven wins and no goals conceded. Despite this, Tuchel is approaching the Albania game with a focus on avoiding unnecessary risks that could jeopardize their World Cup campaign.

Tuchel highlighted the potential consequences of a red card, referencing Cristiano Ronaldo's possible two-game ban at the World Cup after being dismissed against the Republic of Ireland. He also alluded to Wayne Rooney missing the start of Euro 2012 due to a red card received at the end of qualifying.

"It is important," Tuchel said. "I'm aware of it and we will talk about it. No red cards please. We are through, and if a player is the last man and holds the shirt, he gets the red card. If there's a doubt, then it would be smarter not to do it."

Tuchel said he would even instruct his players to think twice before fouling an opponent who is through on goal. "If he goes in the last man example and if we can avoid it, no red card of course," he stated. "But I don't want to make it too big a subject because then you have a cloud above you. But if you have the choice, don't do it."

England will face Albania at 6 pm local time on Sunday. While the match is significant for Albania, who have secured a play-off position, England have already qualified and are using the game as preparation for the World Cup.

Tuchel is expected to make some changes to the team for the Albania match. Ezri Konsa has withdrawn from the squad due to a calf injury, while Marc Guehi is also out with a foot injury. Despite these absences, Tuchel is confident in the depth of his squad. Harry Kane is expected to start again.

Tuchel has also addressed the importance of squad unity and the role of substitutes. He wants players to channel their anger at not starting into positive contributions when they come off the bench. "We need a good bench," Tuchel said. "We play in 40 degrees and we will play after a long, long season." He added that England might be the nation that suffers the most from international football, long seasons, two cups, and cup finals.

Tuchel's focus on discipline and squad management highlights his determination to ensure England are in the best possible shape for the World Cup. While a victory against Albania would maintain their perfect qualifying record, Tuchel is prioritizing the bigger picture and the importance of having all his players available for the tournament next summer.
