The family of Lalu Prasad Yadav, patriarch of the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), is embroiled in a public dispute after the party's defeat in the recent Bihar Assembly elections. Rohini Acharya, Lalu Prasad Yadav's daughter, has made serious allegations against her brother Tejashwi Yadav and his close associates, leading to her decision to quit politics and initially disown her family.
Acharya has stated that she was harassed and abused by her kin, including accusations of donating a "bad" kidney to her father in exchange for money and a party ticket. She also alleges that she was forced out of her home by Tejashwi, Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Yadav, and Rameez, a long-time friend of her brother.
In a series of posts on X (formerly Twitter), Acharya recounted the events that led to the family feud, emphasizing that she is telling the truth. She said that her parents, Lalu Prasad and Rabri Devi, as well as her sisters, were distressed by the situation. "Yesterday abuses were heaped on me and I was accused of donating my bad kidney to my father, and that too in exchange for crores of rupees and a party ticket," Acharya stated. She further added that she considers donating a kidney to her father without the permission of her husband and in-laws as a "huge sin".
Acharya clarified that she has only disowned her brother, Tejashwi Yadav, and that her parents, especially her father, have always supported her. "I have just disowned my brother. My parents and my sisters are with me," she said. She also mentioned that she is going to Mumbai, where her in-laws reside, and that her mother-in-law is very worried about her.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Janata Dal (United) have reacted to the family turmoil. BJP State chief Dilip Kumar Jaiswal expressed concern over the division within Lalu Prasad Yadav's family. Janata Dal (United) spokesperson Neeraj Kumar voiced disappointment at Acharya's decision to leave politics and her family, urging Lalu Prasad Yadav to intervene.
The RJD's Shivanand Tiwari has criticized Lalu Yadav's leadership amidst the family feud. Chirag Paswan, a Union Minister, expressed hope that the Lalu family would resolve their disputes soon.
The family drama follows the RJD-led opposition alliance's defeat in the Bihar Assembly election. Acharya's initial announcement to quit politics and disown her family came shortly after the election results. She blamed Tejashwi's close aides, Sanjay Yadav and Rameez, for her decision, stating that they had made her an orphan.
