Manchester City's Pep Guardiola Updates on Rodri's Return and Doku's Potential Appearance Against Sunderland

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has provided a positive update on his squad ahead of their Premier League clash against Sunderland on New Year's Day. Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Guardiola revealed that midfielder Rodri has recovered from his hamstring injury and could feature in the game. Winger Jeremy Doku, who has been sidelined for nearly three weeks with a leg injury, is also in contention to play.

"Rodri has come back. Maybe he can play a few minutes. We need it desperately. Doku, maybe," Guardiola said. However, John Stones and Oscar Bobb are still unavailable due to their respective injuries.

Rodri has been a key player for Manchester City, and his return is a welcome boost for Guardiola's side. The midfielder's presence will provide stability and control in the middle of the park. Doku's potential return would also bolster City's attacking options. The Belgian winger has impressed with his pace, dribbling, and ability to create chances.

Despite the potential return of Rodri and Doku, Guardiola acknowledged that his squad is not at its best due to a busy schedule and several injuries. "In terms of the squad, we are not in our best [availability] right now in this tight, tight schedule," Guardiola said. "But it's obvious, in terms of points we're better than last season".

Manchester City are currently five points behind league leaders Arsenal, but they have a game in hand. Guardiola is confident that his team can close the gap and challenge for the title. City are seeking their ninth straight win in all competitions.

Guardiola is wary of the threat posed by Sunderland, who are unbeaten at home this season. "They are tough. The crowd is always, I remember my first season going there, unbelievable," Guardiola said. "They have beaten Newcastle United. Arsenal, Aston Villa could not win there, so they are tough, but we, at the same time, are ready". Sunderland are in seventh place in the league, with 28 points from 18 games. They have adapted well to the Premier League after being promoted last season.

Looking ahead, Guardiola emphasized the importance of maintaining perspective and enjoying the journey. "We have health, a quite decent sense of humour: So 2025 was nice!" Guardiola said. "We cannot judge the season on if you win the title or don't win the title, there are more important things in life than that. It's try to do our best".

The match between Sunderland and Manchester City will be held on Thursday, January 1st, 2026, at the Stadium of Light.
