Kareena Kapoor Khan has opened up about the harrowing knife attack her husband, Saif Ali Khan, endured earlier this year, revealing the profound impact it had on their family. In a reflective social media post on December 31, 2025, Kapoor acknowledged the challenges the year presented, stating, "2025 has been a difficult year for us, our children, and our families".
The incident occurred in the early hours of January 16, 2025, when an intruder broke into their Bandra residence in Mumbai. Saif Ali Khan sustained multiple stab wounds while confronting the assailant, who had entered their younger son Jeh's room, allegedly demanding money. According to police reports, the intruder scaled a wall and entered the house through a fire escape.
"The attacker was aggressive. I saw him attack Saif repeatedly... Our priority was to take Saif to the hospital," Kareena Kapoor told the police in her statement. Despite his injuries, Saif searched for the attacker, but the intruder had already fled. Kareena insisted they go to the hospital immediately.
Saif was rushed to Lilavati Hospital, where he underwent emergency surgery. Doctors revealed that he had sustained six injuries, including wounds to his neck and spine, with a knife fragment piercing his spine and causing spinal fluid leakage. A five-hour surgery was performed to remove the object and repair the spinal injury. He was treated in the ICU before being moved to a regular room and was able to walk with supervision.
Following the attack, Saif’s team released a statement confirming that he was out of danger and in recovery. The statement also thanked the doctors and well-wishers for their support. Dr. Nitin Dange, a neurosurgeon at Lilavati Hospital, stated that Saif was recovering well and was expected to be discharged within a few days.
In the aftermath of the attack, Kareena Kapoor recorded her statement with the Bandra Police, while the police formed over 30 teams to apprehend the attacker. On January 19, 2025, Shariful Islam, 30, was arrested in Thane in connection with the attack.
The incident sparked outrage and concern among fans and the public, raising questions about celebrity safety and privacy. Further fueling the controversy, Saif's medical information and hospitalization costs were leaked on social media, leading to condemnation of the privacy breach.
Months after the attack, Kareena shared her feelings about the incident. "In Mumbai, you never really hear about such incidents...We have still not come to terms 100 percent. At least I haven't. I was very anxious for the first couple of months. It was very difficult to sleep," she confessed. She also expressed her concern for her children, Taimur and Jehangir, who witnessed the attack. "But I don't want to live in that fear for my children because that's also wrong to put that stress onto them," Kareena stated.
Despite the trauma, Kapoor expressed gratitude for the support they received. "We want to thank our fans, our friends, and everyone who stood by us and continues to support us," she wrote, adding that they are entering 2026 with "immense gratitude and positivity".
