Congress Condemns Nagpur Priest's Arrest, Alleges Hate Agenda, and Demands Action Against Bajrang Dal.

In Nagpur, Maharashtra, the arrest of a Christian priest, his wife, and ten others on allegations of forced religious conversion has triggered significant controversy and strong political reactions. The incident occurred on Tuesday night during a Christmas prayer meeting, prompting protests and widespread condemnation, particularly from Kerala.

Father Sudhir, a priest associated with the CSI South Kerala Diocese Nagpur Mission, and his wife Jasmine were taken into custody by the Benoda police following a complaint filed by activists of the Bajrang Dal. The police also arrested others who came to the police station to inquire about the matter.

The arrests have sparked outrage, with Christian organizations and political leaders denouncing the police action and alleging a violation of constitutional freedoms. Bishop Koshy of the CSI Bishops' Council strongly condemned the arrests, calling it a "blatant violation of constitutional freedoms". He emphasized Father Sudhir's 12 years of service in Nagpur, focusing on education and community support, and said the activities cited by authorities were limited to Christmas worship services.

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan described the incident as "deeply disturbing," asserting that it reflects a pattern of targeting minorities. He accused the Sangh Parivar of fueling polarization and undermining constitutional freedoms. Opposition leader V.D. Satheesan echoed these concerns, writing to the Prime Minister and the Chief Minister of Maharashtra to raise concerns about the violation of fundamental rights, particularly the freedom to profess, practice, and propagate religion.

In response to the arrest of the Christian priest in Nagpur, Maharashtra, Congress MP K.C. Venugopal has strongly criticized what he describes as the BJP's "hate-filled agenda" and demanded action against the Bajrang Dal. Venugopal condemned the arrest, calling it an indication that the BJP is using state machinery to selectively target Christians and stated that the polarization is growing, making life unlivable for minorities in BJP-ruled states. He insisted on the immediate withdrawal of the FIR against the priest and demanded strict action against Bajrang Dal activists for their alleged hooliganism.

The Church of South India (CSI) has also condemned the arrests and is providing legal assistance to those affected. Sabu Koshy Cherian, representing the CSI Bishops Council, called the arrest unacceptable and affirmed the council's full legal support.

Father Sudhir, after being released on bail, stated that the allegations of forced conversion were baseless and that the gathering was for a birthday celebration with some Christmas songs. He questioned how singing Christmas songs could be considered religious conversion.

The incident has become a major point of contention, with church leaders and the public demanding the release of those arrested and criticizing the police for not sharing case details. As tensions rise, particularly with upcoming elections, this event has the potential to significantly impact politics and community relations.
