Amitabh Bachchan Film Halted: Director Conflict Led to Shelving of Highly Anticipated Project

In the illustrious career of Amitabh Bachchan, a name synonymous with Indian cinema, there exists a chapter of a film that never saw the light of day due to creative differences with its director. This was "Devaa," a project in the 1980s helmed by Subhash Ghai, a prominent director known for blockbusters like "Karma". The film, which boasted a stellar cast including Shammi Kapoor, Raj Kumar, and Meenakshi Seshadri, was shelved after a clash between Bachchan and Ghai, preventing what could have been a significant addition to the actor's filmography.

"Devaa" was envisioned as a film where Amitabh Bachchan would portray the character of a dacoit, for which he grew a long beard and hair to fit the part. After ten days of shooting, a disagreement arose when Bachchan, while reviewing the script on set, had some questions regarding certain scenes. He requested an assistant to call for Subhash Ghai, but the director reportedly refused to come, stating that if Bachchan had any questions, he should come to him. This response led to Bachchan's immediate departure from the set, effectively ending the film's production.

The incident led to a permanent rift between Amitabh Bachchan and Subhash Ghai, with Bachchan never working in any of Ghai's films afterward. The film had a grand muhurat ceremony, with veteran actor Dilip Kumar clapping the board.

While "Devaa" remains the most cited instance of a fallout between Bachchan and a director leading to a film being shelved, it is not the only project of Amitabh Bachchan's that faced such a fate. Several films starring the actor were shelved for various reasons, ranging from financial issues to the actor's unavailability due to health concerns or prior commitments.

For example, "Mehrunnisa" (2013), a romantic drama co-starring Chitrangada Singh, Waheeda Rehman, Abhishek Bachchan, Ranbir Kapoor, Rishi Kapoor, and Vidya Balan, was shelved due to financial constraints. "Power" (2013), an action thriller with Sanjay Dutt, Anil Kapoor, Ajay Devgan, and others, was canceled due to Sanjay Dutt's legal issues. "Dogs" (2011), also starring Rishi Kapoor and Sushmita Sen, was shelved for unknown reasons after its announcement.

Moreover, there was "Shantaram," an international film directed by Mira Nair, where Bachchan was to play a supporting role alongside Johnny Depp. This project was indefinitely shelved due to the 2008 Writers Guild of America strike.

Despite these setbacks, Amitabh Bachchan's career has been marked by numerous successes and memorable performances. With a career spanning over five decades and more than 200 films, he remains one of the most influential figures in Indian cinema.
