New Delhi: A 23-year-old man was killed, and two others were injured early Sunday morning after a speeding Mercedes-Benz SUV struck them near Ambience Mall in South Delhi's Vasant Kunj area. The incident occurred around 2:33 a.m. near the mall on Nelson Mandela Marg.
Upon arriving at the scene, police found a severely damaged Mercedes G63 and three injured men. The victims, aged 23, 35, and 23, were employees at a restaurant located inside the Ambience Mall. They were reportedly waiting at an auto-rickshaw stand adjacent to the mall after closing hours.
"A team reached the spot opposite a mall and found a Mercedes G63 in a mangled condition," Deputy Commissioner of Police (Southwest) Amit Goel said in a statement.
The injured men were immediately transported to a hospital. Rohit, 23, a native of Uttarakhand, was declared dead upon arrival. The other two victims are currently receiving treatment, and their condition is reported as stable.
The driver of the Mercedes SUV has been identified as Shivam, 29, a resident of Karol Bagh. He has been detained by the police. Initial investigations suggest that Shivam was returning home from a wedding with his wife and elder brother when the accident occurred. According to police, the vehicle lost balance near a road diversion, causing it to veer towards the auto stand where the victims were waiting. The vehicle first hit a pole at the auto stand where the victims were waiting. The impact flung the men onto the road, causing fatal and serious injuries.
The Mercedes G63 is registered to Abhishek, a friend of the accused, and was allegedly borrowed by Shivam for personal use. Delhi Police are currently examining CCTV footage and conducting a mechanical inspection of the SUV. Authorities are also investigating whether speeding or impaired driving contributed to the accident.
A case has been registered, and a thorough investigation is underway. Police have stated that necessary legal action is being taken in accordance with the law.
