Hyderabad Police have taken major preventive action against 86 individuals belonging to 10 rival gangs in a move aimed at preempting criminal activity and ensuring public safety. The police have "bound over" these individuals. This action comes in the wake of Telangana Director General of Police (DGP) Dr. Jitender's directive to police officers across the state to take strict and sustained action against organized criminal gangs and drug-related offenses.
Dr. Jitender, speaking at the First Half-Yearly Crime Review Meeting at the DGP Office, emphasized the importance of vigilance, proactivity, and strategic efforts in combating crime. He stressed targeted surveillance on long-operating gangs and advised utilizing existing legal provisions to dismantle criminal networks, noting that even incarcerated individuals can influence operations.
The DGP also voiced serious concerns about rising drug abuse, especially among young people. He urged intensified efforts to trace narcotics sources smuggled from other states and to strengthen enforcement and awareness campaigns to curb drug use and trafficking.
During the crime review meeting, officials presented updates on recent arrests in drug-related cases, the problem of counterfeit medicines, legal loopholes in current investigation procedures, the need to improve forensic and medico-legal systems, strengthening the prisoner escort system, and upgrades in surveillance and traffic management.
Dr. Jitender concluded the session by urging police forces to uphold professionalism, enhance inter-departmental coordination, and prioritize public safety through timely and effective policing. A statement from the DGP's office confirmed these directions and emphasized a zero-tolerance approach toward organized crime and narcotics.
In a separate incident in 2023, a gang of six people, including a police constable working with the Greyhounds unit in Warangal, were caught while in possession of 44 kilograms of marijuana by the Telangana State Anti-Narcotics Bureau and Langer Houz police. Officials also seized four modified high-end SUVs with compartments to conceal contraband and ₹12 lakh of drug money from the gang. Hyderabad police commissioner C.V. Anand stated that the accused who were caught peddling drugs will have their properties seized.
