A 30-year-old Indian student, Vijay Kumar Sheoran from Haryana, was fatally stabbed in Worcester, UK on November 25. The family of the deceased is seeking assistance from the Indian government to bring his mortal remains back to India.
Vijay Kumar was discovered with serious injuries on Barbourne Road in Worcester around 4:15 AM. Despite being immediately rushed to a hospital, he succumbed to his injuries later the same day. The West Mercia Police have launched a murder investigation and have arrested five men on suspicion of murder. However, these men have been released on bail as the investigation continues.
Detective Chief Inspector Lee Holehouse stated that the police are conducting extensive inquiries to determine the events leading up to Vijay's death. He reassured the community that the police presence on Barbourne Road was to gather evidence and should not cause alarm. Holehouse has appealed to the public for any information that could aid their investigation, emphasizing that even seemingly insignificant details could be vital.
Ravi Kumar, the elder brother of Vijay, has written to External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, requesting the ministry's support in repatriating his brother's remains. He mentioned the difficulties faced by the family in navigating the complex foreign procedures, legal formalities, documentation, and financial aspects involved. Ravi has requested that the Indian High Commission in the United Kingdom provide immediate assistance with the repatriation process, including documentation, verification, coordination with authorities, and transportation.
Vijay Kumar Sheoran hailed from Jagrambass village in the Badhra subdivision of Charkhi Dadri district in Haryana. Before pursuing higher education in the UK at the University of the West of England (UWE), Bristol, Vijay had worked for the Central Board of Excise and Customs in Kochi.
The family suspects the involvement of individuals from Haryana and Punjab residing in the UK in the murder, though the UK police have not yet disclosed any details of the case. Ravi Kumar has appealed to Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar for support during this difficult time. MLA Sunil Satpal Sangwan has also urged the Centre to intervene and support the grieving family.
