Andhra Pradesh Braces for Heavy Rainfall as Cyclone Ditwah Intensifies
Visakhapatnam: Andhra Pradesh is bracing for a surge in rainfall as Cyclone Ditwah, currently positioned over the southwest Bay of Bengal near the Sri Lankan coast, intensifies. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reports the system is moving in a northwesterly direction at a speed of 5 kmph and is expected to further intensify into a severe cyclonic storm within the next few hours.
The cyclone is expected to track parallel to the Tamil Nadu–Puducherry coast, bringing heavy rainfall to coastal Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and the adjoining southern districts of Andhra Pradesh. While landfall is appearing less likely, the storm's proximity is causing significant disruption across the region.
South Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema are expected to experience widespread rain, with isolated heavy to very heavy precipitation. The IMD has issued a red alert for November 30, forecasting extremely heavy rainfall in isolated places within Nellore, Chittoor, Tirupati, and Annamayya districts. An orange alert is in effect for Prakasam and YSR Kadapa districts and Rayalaseema, indicating the possibility of heavy to very heavy rain in those areas.
The Andhra Pradesh government has activated its State Emergency Operations Centre, closely monitoring the cyclone and issuing alerts to district administrations in potentially affected regions. Government departments have been instructed to implement necessary preparedness measures, including the return of fishermen from the sea and advising farmers to stay cautious. Warning messages are being disseminated to the public, and residents in low-lying areas are urged to remain alert for potential sudden flooding.
The severe weather has already impacted normal life in parts of southern India. Chennai Airport had to cancel 54 flights. The Southern Railway has also announced changes to train operations.
As of today, light rain is present, with temperatures around 75 °F (24 °C) and 86% humidity. The forecast for the next few days indicates a high chance of rain, with Wednesday, December 3, expected to have heavy rain.
Authorities are urging the public to adhere to safety instructions and remain vigilant as Cyclone Ditwah continues to intensify and bring heavy rainfall to Andhra Pradesh. Rescue and relief teams have been deployed to manage any potential impact from the storm.
