Lok Sabha Adjourned Amidst Uproar: Live Updates on Opposition's SIR Protests and Parliamentary Proceedings.

The Lok Sabha was adjourned until 2 PM today, December 1, 2025, due to persistent uproar from the opposition. The disruption stemmed from demands for a discussion regarding the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.

As soon as the House assembled in the morning, opposition MPs from the INDIA bloc began their protest, calling for a discussion on SIR and its withdrawal in Bihar. The opposition's protest included sloganeering and displaying placards, which led Speaker Om Birla to initially adjourn the House. When the Lok Sabha reconvened, the opposition members continued their protest against the SIR drive.

The winter session of Parliament commenced today, and the opposition has signaled its intent to challenge the government on several issues, including the SIR of electoral rolls. Congress MP KC Venugopal moved an adjournment motion in the Lok Sabha concerning the SIR issue, emphasizing the undue pressure on Booth Level Officers (BLOs), reported deaths, and the panic and confusion caused among citizens. He argued that the uncoordinated implementation of SIR undermines public trust and the integrity of democratic processes.

Earlier, prior to the adjournment, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman introduced several bills, including the Central Excise (Amendment) Bill, 2025, the Health Security and National Security Cess Bill, 2025, and the Manipur Goods and Services Tax (Second Amendment) Bill, 2025.

The Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls has faced opposition, particularly concerning its implementation in states such as Bihar. Opposition parties have alleged that the SIR exercise could disenfranchise voters ahead of the Assembly elections. Concerns have also been raised about the pressure on BLOs and the potential for errors and omissions in the revised rolls.

During the Monsoon session, the opposition disrupted the Lok Sabha proceedings, demanding a discussion on the SIR and calling for its withdrawal. Opposition leaders had previously written to the Speaker seeking a debate on the SIR. The Speaker has reminded members that the House has been unable to pass any bills due to repeated disruptions.

The ongoing protests reflect the deep divisions between the ruling and opposition parties regarding electoral processes and the integrity of the voter rolls. The opposition's persistence in raising the SIR issue suggests it will remain a contentious point throughout the winter session.
