Indian Navy Chief Dismisses Claims of Chinese Spy Ships in Indian Ocean as Purely Imaginary.

Recent reports suggesting a surge in the presence of Chinese spy ships in the Indian Ocean, potentially leading to a delay in India's missile tests, have been refuted by Navy Chief Admiral Dinesh K. Tripathi. Speaking on the sidelines of the National Defence Academy's 149th Passing Out Parade in Khadakwasla on November 30, 2025, Admiral Tripathi dismissed these claims as a "figment of imagination".

Admiral Tripathi acknowledged that survey and satellite tracking ships from other nations, including China, have appeared in areas of Indian interest in the past. However, he emphasized that such occurrences are normal in global maritime practices. He stated that the Indian Navy routinely monitors the activities of foreign vessels, including dual-use ships, to maintain comprehensive maritime domain awareness in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR).

In March 2025, Admiral Tripathi addressed concerns about Chinese dual-purpose civilian ships suspected of performing military roles. He stated that the Indian Navy is aware that some Chinese vessels are "not doing what they have declared" and that their activities are being closely monitored. In some instances, the Navy has asserted that certain activities are not permitted. These comments were made during a discussion on "Deepwater Perils: Securing Trade" at the Raisina Dialogue.

These vessels are equipped with advanced hydrography equipment that can map the seabed, which is crucial for understanding potential submarine routes during a crisis.

The Indian Navy Chief has stressed the importance of collaboration with other nations to address security challenges in the IOR. He stated that maintaining peace and ensuring unhindered trade in the region is a shared responsibility and that India is working with multiple partners to achieve this goal.

Admiral Tripathi has also affirmed the Indian Navy's commitment to being prepared for both current and emerging challenges. The Navy is focused on advancing across all domains and incorporating cutting-edge technologies like artificial intelligence and robotics to stay ahead of potential threats.

While Admiral Tripathi downplayed the recent reports of Chinese spy ships influencing missile test schedules, he has consistently maintained that the Indian Navy is vigilant and capable of maintaining maritime domain awareness in the Indian Ocean. The Navy continues to monitor foreign vessels and collaborate with international partners to safeguard India's strategic interests and ensure stability in the region.
