A wedding celebration in Bodh Gaya, Bihar, took a sour turn on November 29, 2025, when a dispute over a shortage of rasgullas, a popular Indian sweet, escalated into a full-blown brawl between the families of the bride and groom. The incident, which occurred at a hotel where the bride's family was staying, resulted in several injuries and the cancellation of the wedding.
According to reports, the conflict erupted after the wedding rituals had concluded, when the bride's family discovered that there was an insufficient number of rasgullas at the food counter. What began as a verbal argument quickly descended into physical violence, with guests from both sides exchanging punches, shoves, and even wielding plastic chairs as weapons. CCTV footage of the event shows individuals initially gathered peacefully around the food stalls before the situation spiraled out of control.
The groom's father, Mahendra Prasad, confirmed that the fight was indeed triggered by the rasgulla shortage. He further alleged that the bride's family filed a false dowry case against them following the altercation. Munni Devi, the groom's mother, claimed that the bride's relatives took jewellery that she had brought as gifts amidst the chaos. She also stated that the groom's family had paid for the hotel booking.
While the groom's family expressed their willingness to proceed with the wedding despite the fracas, the bride's family ultimately decided to call it off. The incident has gained widespread attention after CCTV footage of the brawl went viral on social media.
This is not an isolated incident, as similar conflicts have arisen at Indian weddings due to disagreements over food or other arrangements. In November 2023, a fight broke out at a wedding in Agra, Uttar Pradesh, also due to a shortage of rasgullas, leaving six people injured. In October 2022, a man was killed in a fight over a shortage of sweets at a wedding in Etmadpur. These incidents highlight the importance of managing expectations and ensuring adequate provisions at large social gatherings to prevent such disputes from occurring.
