New Delhi is under a security lockdown as it hosts Russian President Vladimir Putin for a two-day visit. The city has been transformed into a fortress with multi-layered security. This visit marks Putin's first trip to India since the start of the Ukraine war.
Security Measures
A concentric five-layer security grid has been established, combining the security protocols of Russia's internal agencies with India's counter-terrorism forces. Over 50 members of the Russian security protocol teams are working with the Delhi Police and other agencies. Their primary role is to secure and inspect routes before Putin's arrival. Senior Delhi Police officers are overseeing the security arrangements throughout the capital. SWAT teams, Quick Response Teams (QRTs), and anti-terror squads are patrolling strategic locations.
A special control room has been set up in each hotel, with snipers occupying rooftops. These snipers have guns equipped with AI-aided technology. Anti-drone systems have also been installed around the venues.
Traffic Disruptions
The enhanced security measures have led to traffic disruptions. Commuters are expected to face congestion on routes including NH8, Dhaula Kuan, Sardar Patel Marg, Panchsheel Marg, and Shanti Path. The Delhi Traffic Police have issued advisories, announcing restrictions and diversions.
Putin's Itinerary
Putin's itinerary includes paying homage at Rajghat, a bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi at Hyderabad House, and engagements at the FICCI event in Bharat Mandapam. He will also attend a state dinner at Rashtrapati Bhavan. His cavalcade will move early in the morning towards Raj Ghat, potentially leading to congestion around India Gate, Delhi Gate, and ITO. In the afternoon, his visit to Bharat Mandapam is likely to affect Mathura Road, Mandi House, and Bhairo Road.
The "Rolling Bunker"
Central to Putin's security is his custom-made Aurus Senat limousine, which has been flown in from Moscow. The vehicle is designed to withstand sniper fire, IED blasts, and chemical attacks, and features run-flat tires and an emergency oxygen supply.
Strategic Importance
Putin's visit is not merely a diplomatic event but a stress test of India's ability to navigate a fragmented global order. India and Russia are set to review their "Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership," including defense, nuclear energy, and trade conducted outside the dollar system. The visit is happening at a critical time in global affairs, adding urgency to the meticulous planning of every movement.
