Putin Praises Modi's Independent Leadership: A Strong and Resilient Stance Against External Pressures.

Putin Praises PM Modi, Highlighting Strong India-Russia Ties

During a high-profile visit to India, Russian President Vladimir Putin asserted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is a leader who "does not succumb to pressure," particularly from the United States regarding tariffs on India's oil trade with Moscow. Putin's remarks came during an interview with India Today, hours before he landed in Delhi for summit talks with PM Modi on December 4, 2025. Modi personally welcomed Putin at the airport, underscoring the importance of the relationship between the two nations.

Putin emphasized that India is a "great power" and can no longer be treated as it was in the past. He noted that over 90% of transactions between Russia and India are now conducted in their national currencies, reducing reliance on the US dollar. When asked about the US and Western sanctions aimed at halting India-Russia oil trade, Putin stated that the world recognizes it cannot address India as it did 77 years ago, referencing India's independence from British rule in 1947.

"Prime Minister Modi is not someone who succumbs to pressure easily," Putin said. "The Indian people can certainly take pride in their leader. This is absolutely obvious. His stance is unwavering and straightforward, without being confrontational. Our goal is not to provoke conflict; rather, we aim to protect our lawful rights. India does the same". He also mentioned that his relationship with PM Modi is both professional and personal.

Putin highlighted the long-standing defense and trade relations between India and Russia. He also lauded India's growing global stature and the shifting international attitude toward New Delhi, attributing this shift to Modi's leadership. "India cannot be treated the way it was several decades back," Putin stated.

In addition to his comments on India's resilience, Putin also expressed Russia's full support for India's fight against terrorism. He called New Delhi a "full ally" in confronting violent extremism. Putin's remarks followed recent terror attacks in Pahalgam and Delhi, addressing the global tendency to label groups as terrorists in one country and freedom fighters in another. He asserted that "to achieve freedom we must use lawful means only. Any actions involving criminal methods or those harming people cannot be supported".

Putin's visit included the 23rd India-Russia Annual Summit, where discussions focused on expanding economic ties beyond energy and defense. Both leaders were expected to explore opportunities for collaboration across various sectors. Putin also acknowledged the trade imbalance between Moscow and New Delhi and expressed Russia's intention to increase imports of agricultural products and medicines from India.

Ahead of his visit, Putin questioned the US's position on India's purchase of Russian fuel, arguing that if the US can buy Russian nuclear fuel, India should have the same right. He emphasized the importance of stability among major nations for gradual progress in bilateral and international relations, stating that "Russia's collaboration with India spans an extensive array, and of course, the unique nature of our relationship adds another layer of significance".

PM Modi echoed Putin's sentiments, posting on social media, "Delighted to welcome my friend, President Putin to India. Looking forward to our interactions later this evening and tomorrow. The India-Russia friendship is a time-tested one that has greatly benefited our people".
