New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin engaged in a significant dialogue on Friday, focusing on the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and the broader scope of India-Russia relations. The meeting, held in New Delhi, underscored India's consistent stance on peace and diplomacy, with Modi emphasizing that India stands firmly "on the side of peace".
President Putin's visit, his first to India in four years and since the commencement of the Ukraine war in February 2022, also included a tribute to Mahatma Gandhi, with Putin laying floral tributes at Raj Ghat. He also inscribed a message in the visitor's book, acknowledging Gandhi's invaluable contribution to global peace and the relevance of his principles of freedom, virtue, and non-violence in shaping a more just, multipolar world.
During the bilateral talks at Hyderabad House, PM Modi conveyed that India has been closely following the Ukraine crisis and appreciates Russia's consistent updates on the situation. "Since the Ukraine crisis began, we have been in constant discussion. From time to time, you too, as a true friend, have kept us informed about everything," Modi stated. He also expressed his belief that Russia and Ukraine would soon find a path towards peace through dialogue. Putin, in turn, thanked Modi for India's attention to the peace efforts in Ukraine.
The discussions also encompassed the strengthening of economic ties between India and Russia. Both leaders expressed optimism about reaching new heights in their collaboration. Trade and investment are central to the India-Russia relationship, with both countries aiming for $50 billion in investments by 2025 and a bilateral trade target of $100 billion by 2030. Key sectors for bilateral investment include oil and gas, petrochemicals, banking, railways, steel, and pharmaceuticals.
Furthermore, the two leaders addressed various global challenges, including the COVID-19 pandemic, expressing hope that the world would overcome these crises soon. Modi highlighted the long-standing and robust nature of India-Russia relations, acknowledging Russia's consistent support for India and describing their ties as one of the strongest examples of long-term partnership.
Defense cooperation remains a crucial aspect of the India-Russia strategic partnership. Both countries adhere to a special 10-year agreement that guides military and defense technology cooperation. The INDRA-2025 naval exercises, held in March-April 2025, showcased the continued operational defense cooperation through joint drills.
The summit also served as a platform to reaffirm the strategic importance of the India-Russia partnership amidst a complex global landscape. Despite increasing global pressure and geopolitical constraints, India has asserted its strategic autonomy by maintaining balanced ties with Russia.
In addition to the political and economic discussions, the meeting included a ceremonial welcome for President Putin at the Rashtrapati Bhavan and a meeting with President Droupadi Murmu. The visit also featured a business event with the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry.
The 23rd India-Russia Annual Summit, taking place during President Putin's visit, has reinforced the enduring strategic partnership between the two nations. The discussions reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening cooperation across various sectors and addressing global challenges together.
