Goa Nightclub Blaze: 'Sholay' Song Preceded Deadly Tragedy, A Night of Celebration Turned Deadly.

A devastating fire ripped through the Birch by Romeo Lane nightclub in Arpora, Goa, early Sunday morning, December 7, 2025, claiming the lives of 25 people and leaving six injured. The popular nightspot, known for its lively atmosphere, was packed when the blaze erupted around 12:04 AM local time.

Witnesses recall a scene of revelry moments before the tragedy, with a dancer performing to a remix of the iconic "Sholay" theme song. The festive atmosphere was shattered as fire rapidly engulfed the venue, trapping many inside.

According to initial reports, a gas cylinder explosion in the kitchen may have triggered the inferno. The flames quickly spread, filling the club with thick smoke and causing widespread panic. Many victims reportedly died due to suffocation, while others suffered severe burn injuries. Some of the victims ran towards the kitchen downstairs in an attempt to escape the blaze. It has also been reported that some individuals ran towards the basement and became trapped.

Emergency services, including fire engines and ambulances, rushed to the scene, and firefighters worked tirelessly through the night to control the blaze and rescue those trapped inside. The injured were transported to nearby hospitals for treatment.

Among the deceased, four have been identified as tourists and 14 as staff members. The identities of the remaining seven victims are yet to be confirmed. Goa Police have stated that six individuals were injured and are currently receiving medical treatment.

Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant visited the site and has ordered a magisterial inquiry into the incident to determine the cause of the fire and ascertain whether fire safety norms were followed. Sawant has also stated that those found responsible for any negligence will face the strictest legal action. He noted that the nightclub appeared to have violated fire safety norms and cited "congested doors, improper ventilation" as contributing factors to the high death toll. An FIR has been lodged against the owner and the general manager of the nightclub, and authorities have stated they will be arrested.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences to the bereaved families and announced an ex-gratia payment of ₹2 lakh from the Prime Minister's National Relief Fund (PMNRF) for the next of kin of each deceased, and ₹50,000 for the injured.

The tragedy has cast a pall over Goa, a state renowned for its vibrant nightlife and tourism. The incident raises serious questions about fire safety standards and enforcement in entertainment venues, and is expected to lead to increased scrutiny of such establishments. Emergency helpline numbers have been issued by the Goa government to assist families, tourists, and residents affected by the tragedy.
