India's Perspective: Democracy's Struggle in Pakistan Amid Political Turmoil and Instability.

India has sharply criticized Pakistan's political climate, with a spokesperson stating, "Democracy and Pakistan don't go together". This remark was made by Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal on Monday, December 8, 2025, during a weekly briefing in response to a question about the state of democracy in Pakistan, particularly concerning former Prime Minister Imran Khan and ongoing protests.

Jaiswal stated that India is closely monitoring the developments in Pakistan but refrained from further comment. He added, "We keep a close eye on every development in Pakistan. But regarding democracy, you're saying that 'democracy in Pakistan is becoming weak and its strengths are being weakened'. Democracy and Pakistan don't go together. The less we talk, the better".

These comments come amidst escalating political tensions within Pakistan. The Pakistan Army recently launched a direct attack on Imran Khan, with a military spokesperson labeling the former prime minister as "mentally ill" and a "narcissist". This followed Khan's accusations on X against Army Chief Gen. Asim Munir, whom he called "mentally unstable" and blamed for the collapse of constitutional order in Pakistan. Khan has been incarcerated since 2023 following a corruption conviction and faces several legal challenges.

India also addressed the recent border clashes between Pakistan and Afghanistan, expressing concern over civilian casualties. Jaiswal condemned the attacks and reiterated India's support for the territorial integrity, sovereignty, and independence of Afghanistan.

The spokesperson's comments reflect a long-standing skepticism in India regarding the stability of democratic institutions in Pakistan. Some analysts suggest that India generally avoids commenting on Pakistan's internal affairs unless there is a military coup or killings of political figures. However, Pakistani leaders and the Army frequently express anti-India sentiments and comment on India's domestic issues.

The timing of India's remarks coincides with increasing internal strife within Pakistan, including the political tensions and the military's criticism of Imran Khan. Khan's party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), has been demanding access for his family and supporters, amid speculation about his health. Khan himself has alleged mental torture and a lack of access to the outside world while in jail.

The statement by the MEA spokesperson signals a sharp reaction from India to the continuing political crisis in Pakistan. It also reflects India's view of the power dynamics within Pakistan, where tensions between civilian and military establishments are prominent.
