Jammu & Kashmir Government Medical Colleges Ordered to Expand MBBS Program: A Directive for Increased Student Enrollment.

The Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) government is taking significant steps to boost medical education within the Union Territory by directing government medical colleges to increase their MBBS intake. This initiative aims to address the growing need for healthcare professionals, strengthen the region's medical infrastructure, and provide more opportunities for aspiring medical students in J&K.

The recent directives instruct all five government medical colleges to augment their MBBS seat capacity. Specifically, Government Medical College (GMC) Baramulla, GMC Doda, and GMC Kathua will each receive 50 additional seats, while GMC Srinagar and GMC Jammu will each add 20 seats. This enhancement has increased the total number of MBBS seats in J&K's government colleges from 1,185 to 1,375.

This move has been welcomed by officials who indicated that it will significantly increase opportunities for aspiring medical students from J&K, reduce the pressure of competition, and contribute to the long-term strengthening of the healthcare delivery system by producing more trained doctors.

Alongside increasing MBBS seats, there are plans to strengthen super-specialty healthcare in the region. SKIMS is planning to apply for approximately 130 postgraduate and 50 undergraduate seats.

The expansion of MBBS seats in J&K is part of a broader national trend. Across India, there has been a substantial increase in undergraduate medical seats. This expansion aligns with the Centrally Sponsored Scheme, which aims to establish new medical colleges by upgrading district and referral hospitals, with a focus on underserved and aspirational districts.

While the increase in MBBS seats is a positive step, challenges related to infrastructure and faculty shortages must be addressed to ensure the quality of medical education is maintained. The National Medical Commission (NMC) has established minimum standard requirements that medical colleges must meet, including adequate teaching hospital infrastructure, bed strength, diagnostic facilities, skill labs, hostels, and libraries.

Looking ahead, the Chief Secretary has emphasized the need to further expand MBBS and PG seats across all Government Medical Colleges, Dental Colleges, Ayurvedic, and Unani Colleges in J&K. The Chief Secretary also urged the remaining institutions to apply for an additional 50 MBBS seats as soon as the application portal is opened by the National Medical Commission (NMC). Furthermore, the Chief Secretary directed the Principals of Government Dental Colleges at Jammu and Srinagar to take all necessary measures to introduce new MDS courses and increase intake capacity and also called upon the Ayurvedic and Unani Colleges to actively pursue enhancement of seats in their respective institutions.
