Netflix is diving into the world of cryptocurrency with a new comedy film titled "One Attempt Remaining," focusing on the humorous side of a very modern problem: losing access to a fortune due to a forgotten password. The streaming giant announced the project, slated to star Jennifer Garner, with Kay Cannon of "Blockers" directing.
The film centers around a divorced couple who discover that cryptocurrency they won together during a cruise is now worth millions. The catch? They've forgotten the password to access the digital wallet. Adding to the pressure, the couple faces a ticking clock, with only three days left before the account expires. According to What's on Netflix, the ex-couple has only 48 hours to recover the $35 million before the claim expires.
With the clock ticking, the former couple must retrace their steps from that fateful night, hoping to unlock not just their crypto fortune but also the memories of why they fell in love in the first place.
Kay Cannon, known for her work on "Pitch Perfect" and "Cinderella," is directing the film from a script she co-wrote with Joe Boothe and Alexa Alemanni. Jennifer Garner, who has previously starred in Netflix films like "Family Switch" and "Yes Day," will also serve as a producer alongside Shawn Levy and Dan Levine from 21 Laps, and Nicole King for Linden Productions.
"One Attempt Remaining" draws inspiration from real-life crypto mishaps, such as the story of Stefan Thomas, a former Ripple CTO who lost access to a digital wallet containing 7,002 Bitcoin. Thomas had only a limited number of password attempts before the hard drive would erase the data.
While cryptocurrency and blockchain technology have appeared in various films and television series, they have rarely been the central focus of a feature film. Some exceptions include the 2019 film "Crypto," a crime drama thriller about money laundering and cryptocurrency, the 2022 documentary "Trust No One: The Hunt for the Crypto King," and the upcoming "Going Infinite," which explores the collapse of the FTX exchange and its CEO, Sam Bankman-Fried.
"One Attempt Remaining" presents a lighter take on the crypto world, blending romantic comedy with the high-stakes drama of lost digital assets. The film aims to capture the anxieties and absurdities of cryptocurrency in a relatable and humorous way.
As of December 11, 2025, Netflix has not yet announced a release date for "One Attempt Remaining."
