Guwahati, December 12, 2025 – A Special Investigation Team (SIT) in Guwahati has filed a chargesheet in the case of Zubeen Garg's death, accusing four individuals of murder. The chargesheet, consisting of over 3,500 pages, was submitted to the Chief Judicial Magistrate's Court today. The SIT was formed by the Assam government to investigate the circumstances surrounding the singer's death.
Zubeen Garg, a celebrated singer, died on September 19, 2025, in Singapore while swimming in the sea. He was in Singapore to attend the North East India Festival.
The accused named in the chargesheet are Shyamkanu Mahanta, Siddhartha Sharma, Shekhar Jyoti Goswami, and Amritprava Mahanta. Shyamkanu Mahanta was the chief organizer of the North East India Festival. In addition to the murder charges, Garg's cousin, Sandipan Garg, a suspended Assam Police officer, has been charged with culpable homicide not amounting to murder.
The chargesheet compiles witness accounts and evidence gathered since Garg's death, a case that has triggered intense public scrutiny across Assam. The investigation included the examination of over 300 witnesses. The case was initially registered by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and was being probed under sections related to criminal conspiracy, culpable homicide not amounting to murder, and causing death by negligence. Murder charges were added later.
The SIT, led by Special DGP M P Gupta, had earlier arrested seven individuals in connection with the case. The investigation has been ongoing for months, involving multiple arrests and extensive forensic work. The chargesheet, along with the evidence, was brought to the court in four trunks.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had claimed that Garg's death was a "plain and simple murder". However, the Singapore Police Force (SPF), which conducted an independent investigation, stated that preliminary probes did not indicate any foul play. The SPF also mentioned that their investigations might take up to three more months.
The filing of the chargesheet marks a significant development, shifting the matter fully into the judiciary's arena. The courts will now determine the course of the proceedings in the coming weeks.
