Amid ongoing political uncertainty in Manipur, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) central leadership has summoned all BJP MLAs from the state to New Delhi for a crucial meeting on December 14. The meeting is expected to address the state's political situation and the possibility of government formation.
A BJP MLA disclosed that Sambit Patra, the BJP's North East coordinator and national spokesperson, personally contacted the legislators, instructing them to attend the meeting scheduled for 5:30 pm in the national capital. A Sharda Devi, the state BJP president, also contacted several MLAs and is expected to be present. Sources confirmed that even Kuki-Zo BJP MLAs have been invited to Delhi.
Former Chief Minister N. Biren Singh, while departing for Delhi, expressed optimism, stating, "Let us see. I am expecting a positive outcome for a better Manipur from the meeting. I hope the Central Government will make some positive decisions". BJP MLA Ushyam Deben assessed that "a popular government could be formed by December". MLA Y. Khemchand emphasized that peace remained his primary concern. Another BJP MLA, Paonam Brozen, conveyed expectations for a positive outcome and mentioned hearing that Kuki-Zo MLAs were also invited.
The meeting coincides with President Droupadi Murmu's recent two-day visit to Manipur, where she reaffirmed the Centre's commitment to peace and development in the state. Manipur has been under President's Rule since February 13, following Biren Singh's resignation as Chief Minister on February 9. The resignation occurred amidst the ethnic conflict that erupted on May 3, 2023, resulting in over 260 deaths and the displacement of more than 60,000 people.
Since the imposition of President's Rule, most BJP MLAs, excluding the 10 Kuki-Zo legislators, have been urging the central leadership to reconstitute a popular government. However, the 10 Kuki-Zo MLAs, including seven from the BJP, have maintained their demand for a 'separate administration' before any new government formation. Kuki-Zo groups are also reportedly pushing for a Union Territory with a Legislature.
In the 60-member Manipur Legislative Assembly, the BJP holds 32 seats. The NPP has seven, the JD(U) six, the NPF five, the KPA two, and the Congress five, along with three independents. Following the demise of NPP MLA N. Kayisii, the Assembly's effective strength stands at 59. Among the 32 BJP MLAs, seven Kuki-Zo legislators have continued to advocate for a separate administration.
The party high command had opted for President's Rule because the MLAs could not decide on a consensus candidate to replace Biren Singh. Discussions have also encompassed land and governance issues in hill areas. The situation remains dynamic as decisions are anticipated.
